JOHN FERRELL and Stuart Holden were the two surprise qualifiers from Day Two of the Las Vegas Desert Classic VI.

Ferrell, a quarter-finalist at the 1999 World Championship, has returned to the professional circuit this year.

The left-hander from Tonbridge Wells - nicknamed "The Joker" - knocked out Ronnie Baxter early on and then saw off Sean Palfrey and Tom Wilson to earn a return to the big stage.

Holden, from Hyde in Cheshire, included Dave Ladley, Andy Jenkins and Steve Hine among his victims to earn his second appearance in a major tournament inside a month.

He was one of the 32 Punch Taverns Qualifiers for the Blue Square UK Open, defeating Kieron Leal in the first round and then losing to Nigel Birch.

Mark Dudbridge bounced back from Monday's final-game defeat to Steve Maish to book his place in the main event.

The former World Championship finalist had two whitewashes, against Paul Cohen and Alan Green, and also overcame Chris White before a 4-3 defeat of American Joseph Swick put him through.

Swick was appearing in the final game for the second successive day, having lost the decider against Mervyn King 24 hours earlier.

Tony Eccles' rapid progress up the PDC Order of Merit will continue after he qualified for his second major tournament since joining the PDC.

Eccles, who competed at the UK Open, earned at least £2,000 after matching Dudbridge in lifting himself following a final-game loss on Monday, when Steve Beaton defeated him 4-3.

His final match again went to a decider, but he was a victor this time against Adrian Gray, having previously seen off Denis Ovens 4-0 and former World Matchplay winner Larry Butler 4-1.

Alan Tabern and Andy Smith also recovered from final-game losses on Monday to progress this time around.

Tabern knocked out Michael van Gerwen 4-3 in the last 32 before whitewashing Alan Caves in his last match.

Smith, meanwhile, dropped just two legs in his successful qualifying, with Jason Clark losing 4-2 in the last 32 and Dan Zimmerman, David Fatum and Andy Callaby - in the decider - all falling to the in-form star from Warwickshire.

Holland's Vincent van der Voort backed up his run to the final of the UK Open by winning a place in the Desert Classic, ending Steve Bentley's good run with a 4-2 win in his deciding game.

Steve Smith was the day's other qualifier, winning a place in the main tournament for a second successive year.

The Dagenham thrower was a 4-2 winner over Alan Warriner-Little in his final match, having seen off Ron Peppers, Jim Williams and Mark Walsh earlier on.

Baxter, Barrie Bates and Jenkins were the highest seeded players not to make it into the main tournament, which sees the PDC's top 12 players qualify automatically.

Welshman Bates lost in the last 32 to Bentley, who had reached the same stage on Monday.

The draw for the First Round will be made at the Tournament Dinner on Tuesday evening.
