ANDY first emerged in the late 1990s, winning the English and Welsh Opens and competing in the Embassy Championships of 1997 and 1998 - where he lost in round one.
He would also suffer first round exits in the 2000 and 2001 events, both to Co Stompe, before winning the 2002 Norway Open.
Smith made his PDC debut by qualifying for the first UK Open the following year, and won the Scottish Regional Final in 2004 against Gary Anderson.
He also took a victory in the UK Open South-West Regional Final to enter the UK Open finals as the number one seed, although Roland Scholten knocked him out in the last 32.
Smith then qualifier for the 2005 Las Vegas Desert Classic, where Andy Jenkins defeated him in round one, and reached the final of the UK Open Irish Regional Final in October, losing to Colin Lloyd.
He qualified for his PDC World Championship debut at the 2006 World Championship, defeating Colin Monk and Ray Carver before losing to Alan Warriner in the last 16 - a display which moved him into the top 32 of the world rankings.
Smith's UK Open challenge was again ended in the last 32, this time to Alan Tabern, before enduring a Desert Classic repeat by qualifying and then losing to Jenkins in round one.
He would also make his World Matchplay debut in the summer of 2006, losing to Roland Scholten, but followed up two quarter-finals on the circuit by reaching the last eight in the World Grand Prix, where he went down to Peter Manley in his best-ever televised run.
The 2007 World Championship saw him lose in round two, again to Jenkins, while Wayne Mardle and Colin Lloyd respectively ended his US Open and UK Open challenges in the last 32.
Smith again came through the Desert Classic's qualifiers, losing to Roland Scholten, and was a first round loser in the World Matchplay against Barrie Bates.
Two quarter-finals on the circuit were followed in October 2007 by victory over James Wade in the final of the Scottish Players Championship, ending over two years without a tournament win.
Disappointment followed at the World Championship, where he lost to Mensur Suljovic at Alexandra Palace, but he would reach the final of the Antwerp Darts Trophy during the spring of 2008, going down to Phil Taylor.
Mardle was his US Open conqueror for a second successive year, while Terry Jenkins inflicting a 9-1 defeat in the UK Open at the last 64 stage,
Ronnie Baxter and Andy Hamilton ensured further early exits in the World Matchplay and World Grand Prix, and Tony Ayres took a 3-2 win in their first round clash at the 2009 World Championship.
Smith reached the second round at the Players Championship Finals to end his run of televised losses, overcoming Colin Osborne 6-1 before losing to Raymond van Barneveld.
He then reached two PDC Pro Tour semi-finals before hitting a nine-darter and winning a Players Championship in Germany in June 2009.
That came after a last 16 exit to Taylor in the UK Open, but after missing out in the Desert Classic qualifiers he then suffered a first round loss to Alan Tabern in the World Matchplay.
