Mark Webster
VICTORY in the 2006 Northern Ireland Open and Europe Cup saw left-hander Mark come to prominence, and was followed by a run to the semi-finals of the World Masters.
He suffered a first round loss to Tony Eccles in his Lakeside Championship debut in 2007, but his progress continued with a victory over Phil Taylor in the group phase of the International Darts League.
He went on to reach the final, losing 13-9 in sets to Gary Anderson, and won the Welsh Open, Canadian Open and World Cup Singles titles during the year.
An appearance in the Grand Slam of Darts ended in a first round exit following the group stage, but the Welshman was seeded number one for his return to the Lakeside Championship.
He battled through the field, overcoming defending champion Martin Adams in the semi-finals and then winning 7-5 against Simon Whitlock in the decider to be crowned World Champion - the third Welshman, behind Leighton Rees and Richie Burnett, to achieve that feat.
Webster captured another Europe Cup title in 2008, although he struggled with a shoulder injury and also continued with his plumbing apprenticeship.
He enjoyed a strong Grand Slam of Darts, winning through to the quarter-finals with a defeat of PDC World Champion John Part, before losing to Mervyn King.
Webster was defeated in the last 16 of the World Masters and also lost at that stage on the defence of his World Championship title, going down 4-0 to John Walton.
Mark moved onto the PDC circuit in February 2009, and swiftly qualified for the Blue Square UK Open, courtesy of a semi-final in the Scottish Regional Final.
He reached the last 16 of the UK Open, defeating Peter Wright and Peter Manley in Bolton before losing 9-7 to Terry Jenkins, although he missed out on qualification for the World Matchplay and World Grand Prix.
His performances on the circuit, though, did earn Webster a debut in the Ladbrokes.com World Darts Championship at the end of 2009.
Following a narrow first round win over in-form Mark Walsh, Webster then saw off Manley, Kirk Shepherd and Co Stompe to reach the semi-finals in his first visit to Alexandra Palace.
Although he was soundly beaten by Phil Taylor in the semis, he bounced back to defeat Raymond van Barneveld in the third-place play-off, earning him a £60,000 pay-day.
A brace of quarter-final runs in Players Championships alongside some solid form in the early months of 2010 have increased Webster's hopes of earning a qualification spot for the World Matchplay, as well as moving him to the edge of the PDC's top 32.
