COLIN LLOYD 6-2 ISEN VELJIC

COLIN LLOYD opened the 2006 World Series of Darts with a victory over Isen Veljic.

The world number one recovered from losing the opening leg to the American, who started brightly by landing double top to take the lead.

Lloyd levelled the match with double 18 in the second leg, and took the next four to move 5-1 up, punishing missed doubles from Veljic to step in and take two of those legs.

The American won the seventh leg by landing double 16 with his first dart, but Lloyd hit a maximum in the next before checking out double ten for the win.

ADRIAN LEWIS 6-0 JIM WIDMAYER

ADRIAN LEWIS set up a tasty second round clash with Colin Lloyd in the World Series of Darts with a whitewash victory over Jim Widmayer.

Lewis' finishing power proved too strong for his experienced opponent, with Widmayer missing a host of doubles during the match.

He was unable to land four doubles in the opening two legs as Lewis took command.

The 21-year-old then landed double 16 to extend his advantage to 3-0, and punished further misses in the next leg by landing double four.

Lewis landed a maximum on his way to the next, and also opened the sixth leg with a 180 before hitting double ten for the match.

ANDY JENKINS 6-1 TOM CURTIN

ANDY JENKINS moved into the second round of the World Series of Darts with a solid display to see off Tom Curtin 6-1.

Curtin won the 12th and final pre-qualifying event for the World Series of Darts last month, but was unable to progress into the last 16.

Jenkins took the first three legs without reply to put himself in the driving seat, landing two maximums on his way to the third leg.

Curtin took out a tidy 95 finish to get off the mark by winning the fourth leg - and missed double top in the next for the same finish.

Jenkins stepped in to land double five and push out to 4-1, and won the next two legs to seal his place in round two.

DENIS OVENS 6-4 BILL DAVIS

BILL DAVIS came close to producing a fairytale victory over Denis Ovens in the World Series of Darts - pushing the world number nine all the way before going down 6-4.

Davis was one of the four players who came through the Friday Night Madness qualifying event, defeating top seed Darin Young along the way.

The Philadelphia-based star had just 14 hours to recover before stepping onto the stage at the Mohegan Sun Casino, but showed his quality with a good display.

Ovens opened up the game with neat two-dart checkout, but Davis copied his double eight finish to level the game.

Ovens pulled away by winning the next three legs, but Davis regained his composure on the doubles to pull back to 5-4.

While Davis stepped in to win the ninth leg and remain in the game, he was unable to prevent Ovens finally landing double five with his last dart to seal victory.

PETER MANLEY 6-3 RAY CARVER

PETER MANLEY secured safe passage into the last 16 of the World Series of Darts with a 6-3 win over leading American Ray Carver.

Carver reached the last 16 at the Ladbrokes.com World Darts Championship last year, and was tipped by many American pundits to upset the odds and defeat Manley.

He came from 3-0 down the cut the gap to 4-3 against his more experienced opponent, but Manley pulled away to move into the second round.

Carver missed doubles in the opening two legs as Manley took the lead, before the Carlisle-based World Championship finalist took out a 116 finish for a 12-dart leg in the third.

Carver stepped in with double four after Manley missed double top for a 142 checkout in the next, and the American landed double one to reduce the arrears to 3-2.

Manley hit his trademark double top in the next leg, but Carver won the seventh to increase the pressure on his opponent.

But Manley rose to the challenge, and won the next two legs without reply to earn his place in round two.

MARK WALSH 6-4 JEFFREY RUSSELL

MARK WALSH overcame a spirited fightback from Jeffrey Russell to win a place in round two of the World Series of Darts with a 6-4 victory.

The 2005 Budweiser UK Open finalist looked set for a comfortable win when he took a 4-0 lead with some clinical finishing.

Russell - one of the four Friday Night Madness qualifiers for the World Series of Darts - found his rhythm and began the comeback in the fifth leg by landing double top with his first dart.

He took out a 54 checkout in the bizarre fashion of 11, treble three and double 17 in the sixth leg and hit double ten to cut the gap to 4-3.

Russell also had one dart to level the game in the eighth leg, with Walsh stepping in to land double five after his opponent was off target on double top for a 115 finish.

Russell hit scores of 177 and 140 on his way to winning the ninth leg, and set up another shot at double top in the next with a 132 score.

But Walsh kept his cool to take out 115 with treble 19, 18 and double top to seal a hard-fought win.

ROLAND SCHOLTEN 6-1 ROGER CARTER

ROLAND SCHOLTEN produced a polished display to overcome Roger Carter 6-1 and move into the last 16 of the World Series of Darts.

The Dutchman was clinical in his finishing to maintain the PDC stars' 100 percent record against their American counterparts.

Scholten opened the match with finishes of 91 and 76, and took out double top to create a 3-0 cushion.

Carter responded in style, opening the fourth leg with scores of 180 and 140 before hitting double 16 to get off the mark.

Scholten regained a three-leg cushion by winning the fifth leg on double top, and made Carter pay for missing seven darts at the double in the next to go 5-1 up.

Carter also missed two darts at top in the next, with Scholten showing him the way by landing his first dart in the bed to complete the win.

DENNIS PRIESTLEY 6-1 JOE EFTER

DENNIS PRIESTLEY ensured his place in the second round of the World Series of Darts with a 6-1 win over Joe Efter.

Priestley was never in trouble, despite a spirited display from local favourite "Bazooka Joe".

The two-time World Champion took the first five legs without reply, including a 110 finish in the second.

Efter missed one dart at double 18 for a 103 finish in the fifth, but did manage to get off the mark by landing his first dart at double top in the sixth - after Priestley was off-target with a string of darts for the match.

But the Yorkshireman managed to hit double 16 in the next to end another American's dream.

PHIL TAYLOR 6-2 TIM O'GORMAN

WORLD CHAMPION Phil Taylor defeated Tim O'Gorman 6-2 to move into round two at the World Series of Darts.

O'Gorman, a detective from Melville, was one of the four Friday Night Madness qualifiers for the tournament, but saw his hopes of winning $1 million dashed by Taylor.

Taylor started strongly, winning the opening leg with double four before posting an 11-darter in the second.

O'Gorman hit back to land double ten and win the third, but two more legs for Taylor put hi 4-1 ahead.

O'Gorman won the sixth leg with an 80 finish to pull back to 4-2, but Taylor won the next two with double five and double top to progress.

TERRY JENKINS 6-4 TIMOTHY GROSSMAN

TERRY JENKINS survived a strong challenge from Timothy Grossman to win their first round clash in the World Series of Darts 6-4.

Jenkins led 3-1 before Grossman - who won the Connecticut Qualifier to win his place in the Mohegan Sun event - hit back to bring the American crowd to their feet.

Jenkins took the opening leg on double top before Grossman copied the finish with a 94 checkout to level matters.

Jenkins took the next with Grossman sat on double top, and he won the fourth leg to move 3-1 ahead.

Grossman won two of the next three to come back to 4-3, before Jenkins landed double ten to regain his cushion.

Grossman took a tense ninth leg, dramatically hitting double six and then double for when needing 20, which again pulled him back to within touching distance of his opponent.

But Jenkins' scoring power saw him pull away in the tenth, with a 134 score putting him first to the double before he sealed the win with double top on his final dart.

KEVIN PAINTER 6-3 JIM WATKINS

A DETERMINED display from Kevin Painter saw him move into round two at the World Series of Darts, defeating Jim Watkins 6-3.

The world number six took the opening two legs to put himself in command as Watkins - a veteran of the American scene with experience at the World Championship and World Matchplay - settled back into life on-stage.

Watkins took the third leg by hitting double top at the first attempt, although Painter restored a two-leg cushion by taking the fourth.

The American stepped in to land double one for the fifth leg after Painter missed six darts at a double, and the pair shared the next two legs to leave the PDC star just 4-3 up.

But a 41 finish, with Watkins sat pressuring him, put Painter within one leg of the match, and he wasted little time by landing double 18 in the next to take victory.

The former World Championship finalist was in scintillating form, hitting six out of nine attempts at doubles and showing good scoring.

He landed maximums in two of the opening three legs, and took out a 101 finish in the other as he quickly opened up a 3-0 cushion.

Slivan missed four darts to win the fourth leg, with Dudbridge stepping in to take out 66 with treble ten and double 18.

He then finished with his first dart at double top in the next two to set up a tie against Kevin Painter in Round Two.

WAYNE MARDLE showed flashes of his brilliant best in opening his challenge at the World Series of Darts with a 6-3 win over Dave DePriest.

The number six seed took the opening two legs without reply, landing a maximum in the second, which he took in 12 darts.

DePriest won the third in 16 darts after some consistent scoring, and then hit double top to square the game at two-all.

Mardle stepped up a gear to take the next three without reply, and began the eighth leg with another maximum before DePriest hit double eight to strike back.

But the flamboyant Essex star wrapped up victory with double four in the ninth to move into the last 16.

JOHN PART 5-6 JOHN KUCZYNSKI

JOHN KUCZYNSKI became the first American to reach round two at the World Series of Darts with a sensational 6-5 win over John Part.

The US number one remains on course to scoop the $1 million first prize after a dramatic triumph - with Part missing a dart to win the game before Kuczynski landed double top for victory in the deciding leg.

The first two legs went with the throw before Part edged 2-1 up by winning the third on double 16.

But it was to be the only time in the game that the Canadian led in the game, with Kuczynski reeling off three straight legs to move 4-2 up.

Part produced a superb 161 checkout to take the seventh, and then won the eighth - despite a maximum from his opponent - to level things.

The two-time World Champion narrowly missed double top for a 104 finish in the next, with Kuczynski stepping in to land double top.

The roles were reversed in the next, with Kuczynski missing double ten for a 140 finish before Part took out 93 with a bull, 11, double 16 combination to take the match into the deciding final leg.

Another 180 from Kuczynski gave him the cushion, although he missed one dart at double top to take the win.

Part stepped up, missing double 16 for a 116 to give the American one more chance - and he landed the double with his second dart to keep alive his Million Dollar Dream.

Baxter, the world number three, was in strong form, reeling off five successive legs on his way to the victory.

The pair shared the opening two legs, with Wethington taking out an 80 finish to level matters.

But missed doubles in the third leg cost him dear, with Baxter landing double four before then taking out a 104 finish to move clear at 3-1.

A 74 checkout moved him 4-1 up, and he won the next two legs to secure a spot in the last 16.

The Cumbrian produced some strong finishing to see off the qualifier from Soddy Daisy, Tennessee, and move into the last 16.

He won the opening leg by landing double top at the fourth attempt, and repeated the trick in the second.

He took the next three without reply before Chaney earned a shot at the double in the sixth.
