World Championship Qualifying Spots

THE field of qualifiers for the 2011 Ladbrokes.com World Darts Championship has been confirmed, with 16 competitors to take part in the preliminary round of the £1 million tournament in December.

The World Championship, to be staged from December 16-January 3 at Alexandra Palace in London, will see 72 players from around the world competing for the £200,000 title.

The PDC's top 32 players will qualify automatically for the tournament, alongside the top 16 non-qualified players from the Players Championship Order of Merit after the final PDC ProTour events on November 28.

Additionally, the top four non-qualified players from the European Order of Merit will qualify and earn a place in the first round, alongside the leading player from the PDC's North American Order of Merit.

The winner of the PDPA Qualifier, which will be held on Monday November 29 in Derby, will join them in the first round, alongside the DPA Australian Grand Prix champion and the runner-up (who replaces Oceanic Masters winner Simon Whitlock).

There will be 16 further players competing in the preliminary round at Alexandra Palace, comprised mainly of champions of national knockouts held around the world as well as a second player from the North American Order of Merit.

Qualifying events are being held in Denmark, Finland, Sweden, the Caribbean, Japan, the Philippines, Germany, New Zealand and South Africa, as well as separately for West Europe, East Europe and South Europe, with two further places to be confirmed.

The final of the Tom Kirby Memorial Irish Matchplay, between Michael Mansell and Stephen Byrne, will be held at the Citywest Hotel in Dublin on Sunday October 10 as the curtain-raiser to the Bodog.com World Grand Prix final, with the winner taking a preliminary round place.
