German Darts Champs Round Three

PHIL TAYLOR and Raymond van Barneveld will clash in the quarter-finals of the German Darts Championship on Sunday evening, while Simon Whitlock, Dave Chisnall and Wes Newton also remained in the hunt for the £15,000 European Tour title with brilliant third round victories in Berlin.

Taylor kicked off the action in the last 16 with a brilliant whitewash of Colin Lloyd at the Tempodrom, averaging 107.24 to move into the quarter-finals.

The world number one will now meet great rival Raymond van Barneveld in the first of three possible games on Sunday evening if he is to take victory in Berlin, with the Dutch ace seeing off Mark Webster 6-3.

Welshman Webster was level after six legs, but van Barneveld took the next three to book his last eight berth.

"Everything has to be right in your game when you play against Phil, but I'm excited," said van Barneveld. "I'm happy with how I scored and my doubles were okay, but I need to be better tonight."

In-form Dave Chisnall hit six 180s in a brilliant 6-5 win over Terry Jenkins, who came from 4-2 down to lead 5-4 in a thriller only to see the St Helens ace hit a 13-darter to win the deciding leg.

Chisnall now plays Mervyn King in the quarter-finals, following his victory in the all-Norfolk battle with World Youth Champion James Hubbard, who led 4-2 but could not stem a barrage as King took the game's final four legs.

Wes Newton impressed with a 6-1 win over Michael Mansell, averaging 103.44 in the process of setting up a clash with Justin Pipe, who won the inaugural European Tour event in Austria in April and was a 6-4 winner against Co Stompe.

"Wes is a great player and I know what I'll have to do to beat him," said Pipe. "I'll dig deep and hopefully I can beat him, and anything's possible tonight - in Austria my run was really hard too so there's nothing to say I can't go all the way."

Simon Whitlock meets Kim Huybrechts in the other quarter-final, with the Australian in brilliant form as he hit five 180s and averaged 106.83 in his 6-2 win over Kevin Painter before the Belgian saw off Ronnie Baxter 6-4.

The champion of the £82,100 event will be crowned on Sunday night, with the quarter-finals, semi-finals and final taking place in one session at the Tempodrom in Berlin.

Phil Taylor v Colin Lloyd
1-0 - Taylor misses the bull for a 170 finish, but Lloyd misses a dart at tops to allow him back to hit double 15.
2-0 - Lloyd kicks off with a 180 but is punished for three misses to finish 36 as Taylor posts double two to break.
3-0 - Taylor finishes 125 with a showpiece shot on the bull and outer bull for a 12-darter - with Lloyd waiting on 81 after scoring 100, 180 and 140.
4-0 - Taylor takes out a 14-darter to break throw again - pushing his average above 110.
5-0 - Taylor misses three darts at double seven but is handed a reprieve as Lloyd misses the bull for a 135 checkout, and he pins the double to move five legs clear.
6-0 - Taylor scores 140 and 171 to leave 36 after 12 darts and lands double 18 at the first time of asking to seal a whitewash win - ending with a 107.24 average.

Raymond van Barneveld v Mark Webster

2-0 - van Barneveld takes out 44 to double his lead.
2-1 - Webster finishes 92 on the bullseye to get off the mark.
3-1 - van Barneveld misses double 18 for a 156 finish but is then unable to complete the checkout in his next two visits before finally posting double nine.
3-2 - van Barneveld hits three 140s but is unable to take out 81, and Webster follows a 180 by taking out 78.
3-3 - The Dutchman misses five darts to extend his lead and Webster steps in to finish double ten to level.
4-3 - Webster opens with a 180 but misses tops and van Barneveld breaks with a 68 finish.
5-3 - van Barneveld kicks off with a 180 and lands double 12 for a 13-darter to move to the brink of victory.
6-3 - van Barneveld initially misses his chance to take victory, but Webster hits double 15 when throwing for double ten to allow the Dutchman back, and he makes no mistake on double ten.
Raymond van Barneveld: "The game is won on doubles and they're important - as it showed when Mark hit the double 15 at the end, which is hard for him. I was happy with how I scored and I'll go and prepare to play Phil Taylor now in the quarter-finals. Everything has to be right when you play against him but I am excited."

Wes Newton v Michael Mansell

4-6 - Double eight from Pipe sees him secure passage into the last eight.

James Hubbard v Mervyn King

3-2 - Hubbard holds his nerve to finish 20 with his third dart to lead for the first time.
4-2 - Hubbard kicks off with 140 and 180 and takes out 96 for a superb 11-darter to secure his third break of the game and a two-leg lead.
4-3 - King replies with a 180 to open the leg and lands a 140 before hitting double 16 for a 13-darter to break back.
4-4 - King misses two darts for the leg, but Hubbard misses tops to finish 70 and King returns to hit double eight and level.
4-5 - King takes out 72 to break throw again and regain the advantage.
4-6 - King finishes 56 on double four to seal victory.
Mervyn King: "Leg eight was the key - when I was behind I knew I had to hold my own, break him and hold again and he let me in, and I took full advantage. I'm happy to get through but disappointed for James because we practice and travel together. He's a player to watch in years to come. He has so much talent and you'll see much more of him in the future."

Simon Whitlock v Kevin Painter
