Smith & Brown Win In Wigan

MICHAEL SMITH and Keegan Brown shared the spoils in the PDC Unicorn Youth Tour events held at the Robin Park Tennis Centre in Wigan.

Smith, who will face Phil Taylor in the opening round of the PartyPoker.com World Grand Prix in Ireland next Monday, won the first £500 winner's prize of the day thanks to a 4-1 victory over Ricky Evans to cement his second place in the PDC Unicorn Youth Tour Order of Merit.

The St Helens youngster defeated Curtis Bagley and Darren Whittingham in his opening two contests before romping into the last 16 with a 4-0 whitewash against Jake Patchett.

That was followed with victories over Brandon Walsh, Lee Whitworth and Robbie Hewson before defeating Evans to claim his fourth title on this year's Youth Tour.

Ricky Evans' run to the final, as he sought to repeat his Youth Tour win of April 2011, included two 4-0 triumphs in his opening three matches.

After that Evans battled hard with deciding-leg victories over Steve Haggerty, Josh Payne and Shaun Griffiths in the semi-finals, before going down to Smith.

Smith looked on course to reach the final of the second event of the day but suffered a 4-1 semi-final defeat to George Killington, who had lost just five legs in his previous four matches.

In the final Killington, who hails from North London, faced Keegan Brown - who was also contesting his first final on the Youth Tour.

Brown, who has reached two semi-finals on the 2012 Unicorn Youth Tour, went all the way on this occasion as he defeated Killington by a 4-1 scoreline to claim his first title.

The youngster from the Isle of Wight began his run to his first final with 4-2 triumphs over Damien Smith and Josh Payne.

Brown followed that with deciding-leg victories over Jamie Landon and Jake Patchett before a fine 4-1 victory over Arron Monk in the semi's.

Arron Monk, who currently sits at the top of the PDC Unicorn Youth Tour Order of Merit by a comfortable margin, lost in the quarter-finals to James Hubbard in the first event of the day.

Monk gained revenge over the Norfolk youngster by defeating him at the same stage of the second event of the day before losing to Brown in the last four.

Sunday will see one further event take place to complete the weekend's action with £3,000 up for grabs at the Robin Park Tennis Centre in Wigan.
