Newton's Sights Set On Palace

WES NEWTON is hoping for his form to peak at the Ladbrokes World Darts Championship, which begins on Friday.

The Fleetwood ace, the number six seed for the tournament, will kick off his challenge to claim his maiden major title next Tuesday when he meets Johnny Haines in the first round.

A quarter-finalist two years ago at Alexandra Palace, Newton has reached two major finals since, at the UK Open and European Championship, but is bidding to finally lay his hands on major silverware on New Year's Day.

"We all try all year round but when it comes to the World Championship it's the one everyone wants to win," Newton told sportinglife.com.

"You try and put a lot of effort in to peak with your best form at the right time of the year and hopefully I'll do that.

"My TV events are getting better and better and I know I'm going in the right direction and improving, so hopefully the results will take care of themselves.

"I'll try not to put the pressure on myself early on and take it one game at a time. It's probably the widest open it's ever been so it's going to be good."
