Newton Aiming For Great Escape!

WES NEWTON admits that Monday's European Darts Trophy triumph was the ideal start to the most important week of his career.

The world number seven claimed the £20,000 first prize in the Easter European Tour event held at the Glaspalast in Sindelfingen when he edged out Paul Nicholson 6-5 in the final.

Newton is now focusing on Thursday's McCoy's Premier League Darts "Judgement Night" in Brighton, where he is bidding to avoid relegation from the tournament.

Newton enters "Judgement Night" sat on five points at the foot of the table, alongside Gary Anderson, but only one point adrift of Simon Whitlock and two below Adrian Lewis.

He faces Andy Hamilton at the Brighton Centre, and will be full of confidence going into the clash.

"It's probably the biggest week of my career," said Newton. "Being in the Premier League's been the highlight of my darts career, I've loved every minute and I don't want to be relegated.

"There's a lot of scenarios which could happen, but at the end of the day I've got to go up there and win - and if I don't do that, it's immaterial.

"I don't want to be where I am and I don't want to be relegated, I want to keep going, and whatever happens I think I'll be a better player in the future for bring in the Premier League this year.

"I'll focus on my game because I can score with the best players and if I take my chances I think I can beat anybody. It's going to be really tough against Andy, but it's a game I think I can win and I need to win.

"I'll give it my all on Thursday, and winning in Germany is a perfect build-up to it. My confidence is good and I can't wait."
