Tuhua Wins Sydney Darts Masters Spot

NEW ZEALAND'S Monty Tuhua is the second of the DPA Qualifiers for the Sydney Darts Masters.

The Maori ace, 58, came through Monday's second Qualifier at the Warilla Bowls Club with a 6-4 victory over Kerry Whear in the final.

Tuhua, a butcher from Auckland, opened the day with wins over Dave Marshall and Cody King before whitewashing Alex Evans and seeing off Koha Kokiri to reach the semi-finals, where he was a 6-1 winner against Barry Gardner, sharing the game's opening two before taking five successive legs to progress to the decider.

Whear overcame Preston Ridd, Darren Kirk, Ricky Jones, Greg Major and Rob Szabo on his way to the final, but was unable to edge through to win a spot at Luna Park.

Szabo was hoping to follow up his recent success in the DPNZ National Championship, which saw him qualify for the Ladbrokes World Darts Championship, but he never recovered from going 2-0 down in his semi-final with Whear, who also took out a key 134 finish on his way to the final.

Tuesday sees the third DPA Qualifier take place at the Warilla Bowls Club, with the final Sydney Darts Masters spot then decided on Wednesday at the DPA Oceanic Masters event.
