Huybrechts Chasing Title Treble

KIM HUYBRECHTS has set his sights on claiming an amazing treble in The Coral Masters in Edinburgh this weekend, after picking up a brilliant win in the Dutch Darts Masters.

The emerging Belgian ace has capped his rise into the sport's top 16 players by winning back-to-back ranking titles over the past two weekends, firstly claiming a Players Championship event in Killarney before taking the £20,000 European Tour title in Holland on Sunday night.

Should Huybrechts win this weekend's inaugural Masters event at the Royal Highland Centre, he would join world number two Michael van Gerwen in claiming three successive tournament victories during 2013.

The 27-year-old takes on two-time World Champion Adrian Lewis in Friday night's first round, and would have to win four games across the weekend to pick up the inaugural £50,000 title and complete an amazing three Sundays.

"It's been a great couple of weeks for me," said Huybrechts, who defeated Northern Ireland’s Brendan Dolan in the Dutch Darts Masters final with a sensational performance. "I'm loving it and playing some fantastic darts at the moment.

"Before Killarney I only had one title, and now inside two weeks I've got three. I've put in a lot of hard work but really enjoyed myself and played really good darts.

“I'm really happy with the way I've played in the last couple of weeks, only doing good things, so I hope to do some damage in Scotland. I'm going into the tournament with a lot of confidence and I'll do my best."

Huybrechts has won five of his previous seven games against Stoke star Lewis, the reigning European Champion, and the Belgian is anticipating an exciting clash when the pair meet over the best of 11 legs.

"I'm looking forward to it," he said. "When you play Adrian Lewis on the big stage anything can happen, but I feel really good.

"Adrian is a world class player, a former World Champion and he probably will be a World Champion again someday. But I can play well too, and it will be about who plays well on the day.

"It will be a good pace. Both of us are quite quick - I'm not as quick as Adrian though - but it will be good for the fans."

Huybrechts only turned professional in the summer of 2011 after qualifying for that year's European Championship, and he reached his first major final last December at the Players Championship Finals event.

He went on to win his maiden ranking title at a UK Open Qualifier in April, and his successes in the past fortnight have moved him up to a career-high 12th as he prepares to travel to Edinburgh.

"To be in a tournament which features only the top 16 is a big thing for me and it shows how well I'm doing," he admitted. "It's a big tournament, live on TV and to be in it means a lot to me.

"I've been in the PDC for two years now, and I'm really happy to have reached the top 16 already. It shows I am going in the right direction.

"The top 16 was one of my big aims for this year, and I'd already achieved another of my goals by winning a ProTour event, and the next one now is to win a major TV title. I hope it could be this weekend!"
