German Darts Masters Day Two

MICHAEL VAN GERWEN and Phil Taylor enjoyed whitewash victories in the German Darts Masters third round on Sunday, as top-four rivals Adrian Lewis and Simon Whitlock also progressed in the European Tour event at Berlin's Maritim Hotel.

World Champion van Gerwen needed only 12 minutes as he swept aside German ace Jyhan Artut, averaging over 101 in a dominant performance.

He was joined in sweeping into the last 16 of the £100,000 event by 16-time World Champion Taylor, whose 6-0 win over Sweden's Magnus Caris took all of 16 minutes but was equally clinical.

Taylor now plays Dave Chisnall in Monday afternoon's third round, after the St Helens ace hit five 180s in a 6-3 win over Steve West on Sunday.

Van Gerwen, meanwhile, plays Shropshire's emerging talent David Pallett (pictured), who followed up his first round victory over Jamie Lewis with an impressive comeback from 4-2 down to defeat Andy Hamilton 6-4, turning the game with a 145 checkout.

Reigning Lakeside Champion Stephen Bunting, appearing in his first European Tour event since moving onto the PDC circuit, landed a 170 checkout during his 6-4 win over Justin Pipe as he progressed to face Brendan Dolan.

Northern Ireland's Dolan overcame former World Championship finalist Kirk Shepherd 6-4, and enjoyed a double celebration on the day after announcing his engagement to partner Teresa in Berlin.

World number three Lewis was a 6-3 winner against Andy Smith and now takes on Belgian Kim Huybrechts, who punished Paul Nicholson for missed doubles as he won their contest 6-1.

Australian star Whitlock, the world number four, was in sublime form as he defeated plucky Finn Jani Haavisto 6-4 with a 108.21 average, the highest of the tournament so far as he reeled off winning legs of 12, 14, 13, 13, 14 and 13 darts.

Whitlock now plays Scottish ace John Henderson, who edged out World Championship finalist Peter Wright 6-5 in their second round contest.

Ian White was another 6-5 winner as he punished Ronnie Baxter for missing one match dart in their meeting as he progressed to a third round clash with Vincent van der Voort, who overcame Robert Thornton 6-3.

Two of last year's European Tour winners, Steve Beaton and Wes Newton, will now meet in the third round after they enjoyed victories over Steve Douglas and Jarkko Komula respectively.

Newton, in particular, impressed with a new design of darts as he averaged 102.73 in his 6-4 win over Finnish ace Komula, as he seeks to repeat last Easter's European Tour win in Germany.

World Youth Champion Michael Smith shared ten 180s with Mervyn King before edging their game 6-5, and he now plays another qualifier in Andrew Gilding, the emerging Suffolk ace who enjoyed a 6-1 win over Jamie Caven.

The £100,000 German Darts Masters will conclude on Easter Monday, with the third round being held in the afternoon session before the evening session features the quarter-finals, semi-finals and final.

Andrew Gilding followed up Saturday's win over Peter Hudson with an impressive 6-1 victory over Jamie Caven in Sunday's opening German Darts Masters second round game. Gilding enjoyed an immedate break of throw as he finished double 18 for a 13-darter, and though Caven levelled on tops, the Bungay ace took the next two legs in 13 and 14 darts to move 3-1 up. He then followed a 180 by punishing three missed darts at double 16 from Caven on double two, and after double top moved him 5-1 up, he hit the same double to complete another 13-dart leg in sealing the win.

Vincent van der Voort progressed to the last 16 of the German Darts Masters with a superb 6-3 win over Robert Thornton at the Maritim Hotel in Berlin. The Dutch ace took out 72 to win the opening leg, but missed double 11 in the second as Thornton levelled on tops. The Scot then followed a 180 with a fabulous 136 checkout as he moved 2-1 up, only to see van der Voort take out finishes of 91, 110 and 116 to win three successive legs in 12, 15 and 12 darts to move 4-2 up. Thornton capitalised on missed doubles to hit back in the seventh and landed a 180 in the next, but crucially missed five darts at doubles to level as tops moved van der Voort 5-3 up, before he landed a 180 and double eight to complete victory.

Stephen Bunting's European Tour debut continued with a fine 6-4 win over Justin Pipe, as the Lakeside Champion hit a 170 finish in progressing to the last 16 of the German Darts Masters. Bunting finished 86 to break in the opening leg only for Pipe to level by taking out 70, before he defied a 180 from the St Helens man to land double 14 to move 2-1 up. However, Pipe missed two darts at double 18 to win the next as Bunting followed a 180 with tops to level, before moving back ahead on double 16. Pipe punished a missed bull from his opponent to level in leg six on double eight, but Bunting took out a fantastic 170 checkout to regain the edge and finished 89, despite a Pipe 180, in moving 5-3 up. Pipe took out 140 to stay in the game, but missed double ten to repeat the finish in the next as Bunting followed an earlier 177 score by landing double four.

David Pallett caused another German Darts Masters upset by knocking out Andy Hamilton 6-4 in their second round clash. Hamilton led on double ten, before Pallett finished double four to level and double 11 to move 2-1 up - only for the Stoke star to finish 76, double 16 and double five to take a 4-2 lead. Pallett, though, fired in a brilliant 145 finish to hit back, took out 68 to level and then landed a brace of double 16 finishes to claim the win.

Michael Smith edged out Mervyn King 6-5 to reach the German Darts Masters third round, as the pair shared ten 180s in a high-scoring contest. Smith opened the game with a maximum as he took the opening leg, and after King levelled with a 13-darter, the World Youth Champion hit two more 180s before taking the third on double five - having given himself enough cushion to miss seven earlier darts at doubles. King edged the fourth leg and the pair shared 180s in the fifth, but the Norfolk thrower missed his chance to break on the bull as double ten saw Smith edge 3-2 up. King defied another 180 from Smith as he levelled in leg six with a 71 finish, and the next two were shared on double ten before King hit two 180s in the ninth leg, only to miss four darts to break as double ten, again, came to Smith's rescue. King landed a 180 and double 16 to take the game into a decider, but Smith was first to a finish and hit tops to sneak into the last 16.

Wes Newton began his bid for European Tour glory for a second successive Easter with a strong showing to defeat Jarkko Komula 6-4, averaging almost 103 in a consistent display using a new design of dart. Komula landed a 180 in taking the opening leg in 11 darts, with Newton replying with a 76 finish before the Finn took out double five to move 2-1 up. Newton landed a 180 as he levelled with a 12-darter, only to miss tops to break in the next as double three moved Komula back ahead. Newton scored 180, 140 and 170 as he posted an 11-darter to level, before breaking in 13 darts on double ten and hitting tops for a 5-3 lead. Komula landed a maximum to set up a 70 finish as he replied, but Newton finished a 14-darter on tops to book his third round spot.

2013 German Darts Masters winner Steve Beaton set up a third round clash with Wes Newton at this year's event with a 6-2 defeat of Steve Douglas. Beaton took out 120 to break in the opening leg and finished 56 to double his lead before Dougas got off the mark with a 13-darter. Beaton added another 180 before punishing the left-hander's missed dart at tops to level by finishing double two, and after Douglas won the fifth leg he edged a nervy sixth to lead 4-2, with Beaton's 180 followed by a 171 from Douglas only for the PDC newcomer to miss three darts to square the game. Douglas added a 180 in the seventh leg, only to miss two more doubles and allow Beaton to finish a 14-darter to lead 5-2, and a 92 finish put the former World Champion into the last 16.

Dave Chisnall opened his challenge at the German Darts Masters with a 6-3 win over Steve West, hitting five 180s in a strong display. The pair opened the game by trading 14-dart legs, with Chisnall posting a 180 in the first and West finishing double ten to level, before the Betway Premier League star landed another maximum in a 13-darter to lead 2-1. He then broke with the aid of another 180, and double eight, only to be punished for missed doubles as he allowed West to break back immediately on double four. Two more missed doubles, this time at tops, allowed West to level on double ten, but Chisnall found another gear to land an 11-darter before hitting a 159 score to leave 24 in a 13-darter as he moved 5-3 up, and another maximum pushed him clear in the next before he posted double eight for the win.

John Henderson opened the evening session in Berlin with a narrow 6-5 win over Peter Wright in a see-saw contest. The pair shared the first two legs before Henderson edged 2-1 up and hit a 180 as he broke throw on double two - punishing a pair of misses at double 11 from Wright - before then landing tops to move 4-1 up. Henderson also missed the bull to win the sixth leg as the  World Championship finalist hit back on double nine, before taking out 96 and double six to level. Wright then fired in a showpiece 96 checkout of single 20, double 18 and double top as he led for the first time at 5-4. Henderson, though, defied a maximum from his opponent to level with a 70 finish as tops forced a decider, and the Scot landed a key maximum before landing tops again to sneak to victory.

Brendan Dolan enjoyed a double celebration by following up his engagement to partner Theresa earlier on Sunday with a 6-4 German Darts Masters win over Kirk Shepherd. Shepherd took the game's opening leg, but Dolan hit a 180 as he levelled before breaking with a 97 finish and hitting a 171 to set up a 100 finish as he moved 3-1 up. Shepherd responded to level by winning the next two legs, before Dolan regained the edge with a 90 finish in the seventh leg. Double 16 put the Northern Irish ace 5-3 up, and though Shepherd kept his hopes alive on double 16, Dolan sealed victory by taking out tops in the tenth leg.

Kim Huybrechts punished missed doubles from Paul Nicholson in four legs as he claimed a 6-1 win to move into the German Darts Masters last 16. Huybrechts made a fine start by breaking throw immediately with a 13-darter, before taking a scrappy second on double one, after Nicholson missed a dart at double 16 to level. Nicholson also missed double 18 in the next and two darts at double eight in leg four as Huybrechts twice more capitalised by hitting double eight and double ten in moving four legs clear. Nicholson took out double ten to get off the mark in the fifth leg, but missed two darts to take a second leg as Huybrechts finished double 18 for a 5-1 lead before sealing the win by taking out 87 on the bull.

Adrian Lewis defied two ton-plus finishes from Andy Smith to take a 6-3 win from their German Darts Masters second round clash. Lewis kicked off the game with a 13-darter to break throw, finished double 16 to win the second leg and added a 14-dart finish to move 3-0 up, before Smith replied with a 112 checkout. Lewis hit a 174 on his way to the fifth leg, which he took on double four, but Smith fired in a 180 as he took the sixth on double eight and then landed a 102 checkout to pull back to 4-3. Lewis, though, hit another 180 to set up a 63 finish as he took a 5-3 lead, before finishing double eight to seal the win.

Phil Taylor swept into the German Darts Masters third round with a clinical whitewash of Magnus Caris. Caris hit a 180 in the opening leg, but Taylor finished double eight for a 14-darter and doubled his lead on double five in the second, after Caris missed three darts at tops to level. They would be the Swede's final darts at a double in the next three legs as Taylor hit double 16 in each to move 5-0 up, twice hitting the bed with his third dart, before adding a 177 as he, almost inevitably, completed the win on the same double for a fourth leg in a row.

Michael van Gerwen needed needed only 12 minutes as he ended home hopes in the German Darts Masters with a 6-0 whitewash of Jyhan Artut. The World Champion made a brilliant start by scoring 135, 137 and 140 in taking the first leg in 11 darts, before doubling his lead with a 104 checkout - after Artut missed double 16 for a 149 checkout. The Dutchman added a 180 and double eight to win a third leg, before finishing 65 on tops in the fourth, and when Artut missed three darts at double 16 in the next, van Gerwen landed double ten to move a leg away from victory. Van Gerwen was also first to a finish in the next as he missed double six for a 126 finish, but when Artut was unable to take out 96 the Dutchman returned to complete the whitewash on double six.

Ian White survived an 11-leg thriller as he edged past Ronnie Baxter to reach the German Darts Masters third round in Berlin. White finished 80 to win the opener before Baxter took out 72 to level, and White added a 180 in the third before posting double 16 to lead 2-1. Baxter levelled with the aid of a 180 and hit a 177 in the fifth leg, but mised double 18 to break as White this time finished 72 to move 3-2 up. A 70 checkout from Baxter saw him level, with White edging back in front on tops and htiting a 180 to leave 24 in leg eight, but he then missed his chance to break with three darts at double 12 as Baxter levelled. White opened the ninth with a 180, but Baxter fired in two 180s as he produced a brilliant 11-darter to break for the first time in the game and move 5-4 up - but he missed the bull to claim victory with a 129 finish in the next as White hit the middle double to take out 85 and force a decider in which he hit four scores of 100 or better before landing double 16 for the win.

Simon Whitlock produced the best display of the German Darts Masters so far as he averaged 108.21 in a 6-4 win over Finland's Jani Haavisto, who topped a 100 average in reply. Haavisto actually led as he held throw in the first and third legs, taking out 28 and 82, with Whitlock landing a 180 and a 121 finish to get off the mark in the second with a 12-darter. Haavisto posted a 177 to leave 32 in the fourth only to see Whitlock hit double ten for a 14-darter, before he broke in 13 darts with the aid of a 180. Whitlock posted another maximum in another 13-darter to move 4-2 up, with Haavisto landing a 177 in a 13-darter of his own to hit back. A 14-dart finish moved Whitlock into a 5-3 lead, and though he missed a dart for the game in the next - at double eight for a 136 finish after landing another 180, as Haavisto finished double 18 to respond - the former European Champion sealed victory in 13 darts after the pair traded maximums.
