German Darts Masters Third Round

PHIL TAYLOR and Michael Smith will meet in the quarter-finals of the German Darts Masters on Monday evening as the £100,000 European Tour event in Berlin heads towards its conclusion.

Taylor moved through to the last eight at the Maritim Hotel courtesy of a brilliant 6-3 defeat of Dave Chisnall in Monday afternoon's third round, averaging 104.78 in a heavy-scoring display.

The 16-time World Champion opened the game with legs of 12 and 11 darts, and though Chisnall hit back to level at three-all, the St Helens man paid for missing double 19 to take out 158 in the next as Taylor regained the edge and took three successive legs for the win.

Taylor now meets reigning PDC Unicorn World Youth Champion Michael Smith in Monday evening's quarter-finals, in their first stage meeting since the youngster knocked the Stoke great out of the World Championship in December.

Smith's impressive form in the tournament continued as he swept aside Andrew Gilding 6-1, taking the first five legs without missing a double in a fine display.

World Champion Michael van Gerwen joined them in the last eight as he hit five 180s in a 6-3 win over emerging youngster David Pallett, who shared the opening six legs before the Dutch star regained the lead and sealed victory with a brace of 12-dart legs.

Van Gerwen now takes on last year's German Darts Champion, Steve Beaton, who raced to a 6-2 win over Wes Newton in their third round contest.

Scotland's John Henderson also impressed, averaging over 106 and hitting four 180s and a 164 checkout in a 6-2 win over Simon Whitlock.

He also knocked out World Championship finalist Peter Wright in Sunday's second round, and now faces another top-ten star, Adrian Lewis, in the last eight following the reigning Coral UK Open champion's 6-2 defeat of Kim Huybrechts.

Reigning Lakeside Champion Stephen Bunting also averaged over 100 as he saw off Brendan Dolan 6-3, sealing victory with a 161 checkout as he set up a quarter-final against Vincent van der Voort.

The Dutchman had been on course to exit the event when Ian White took a 5-3 lead in their clash, but he missed one match dart in each of the next two legs as van der Voort hit back to send the game into a decider with a 132 checkout, before posting double top to complete the comeback.

Stephen Bunting was the first player to win through to the German Darts Masters quarter-finals, as he sealed a 6-3 win over Brendan Dolan with a 161 finish. Bunting had opened the game with a 120 finish to break throw, and landed double eight to move two legs up before Dolan hit a 180 in a 14-darter to reply. Bunting, though, landed back-to-back 13-dart legs as he moved 4-2 up, only for Dolan to post another 180 in a 14-darter as double 18 gave him a second leg. Bunting's miss at tops proved costly in the next as Dolan landed double 16 to pull back to 4-3, but Bunting posted a 165 score to leave double 18 as he hit another 13-darter to move to the brink of a win which was sealed in fine style in the next leg.

Vincent van der Voort produced a brilliant comeback from 5-3 down as he punished Ian White for missing two match darts as he claimed a deciding-leg victory to reach the German Darts Masters quarter-finals. Van der Voort's opening 14-darter was matched by White in leg two, before the Stoke ace broke in the third - punishing missed doubles from the Dutchman - before double 16 for a 68 finish put him 3-1 up. A miss at the bull in the fifth allowed van der Voort to finish 76 before he added a 180 in a 12-darter to level. Finishes of 76 and 96 moved White 5-3 up, but he missed tops for a 106 finish to claim the win in the next, as van der Voort hit the same bed to keep his hopes alive, before then being off-target on the bull in the tenth leg as the Dutchman produced a brilliant 132 checkout to force a decider. With the momentum in his favour, van der Voort was first to a finish and landed tops to round off the fightback.

Michael Smith's superb run of form at the German Darts Masters continued as he defeated Andrew Gilding 6-1 to move into the last eight. Smith opened the game with a 180 and took out 70 for a 14-darter, before opening the next two legs with further maximums as a brace of 11-dart legs put him three legs up. He then took out 71 to win a fourth leg, before tops maintained his flawless finishing as he took a five-leg lead. Tops in the next saw Gilding get off the mark, but any hopes of a fightback were short-lived as Smith pulled clear to seal the win on tops, hitting the double at the second time of asking.

Phil Taylor averaged 104.78 and shared eight 180s with Dave Chisnall as he claimed a 6-3 win in a superb German Darts Masters third round contest. Taylor made a brilliant start, hitting a 180 and a 121 finish for a 12-darter to kick off the game with a break of throw, before doubling his lead with an 11-darter which featured three 140s. Chisnall, who had hit a 180 in leg two, landed a 177 to leave 24 in the third, and when Taylor wired double 16 to take out 106, he stepped in on double 12 to open his account. Taylor landed a maximum in a 14-darter as he took a 3-1 lead, but Chisnall fired in maximums of his own in the next two as a brace of double 18 finishes saw him level, with Taylor having missed double five for an 89 finish. Taylor, though, regained the lead in leg seven on double four - after Chisnall missed double 19 for a 158 finish - and the pair then traded 180s as the Stoke legend took a 5-3 advantage on double eight, before hitting the same bed to seal the win.

Adrian Lewis progressed to the German Darts Masters quarter-finals with a 6-2 win over Kim Huybrechts. Lewis opened the game with a 180, and took out finishes of 73 and 81 to take the first two legs, bfeore double eight moved him three legs up following a miss at tops from the Belgian. Lewis also had a chance to take the fourth as Huybrechts capitalised on double five, but the reigning Coral UK Open champion hit a 180 in a 14-darter as he moved 4-1 up. Three missed doubles from Lewis across two visits allowed Huybrechts to edge the sixth on double four, but Lewis took the next and finished 80 with two double tops for a 14-darter to seal the win.

John Henderson produced an outstanding performance to average 106.12 in a 6-2 win over Simon Whitlock, as he followed up Sunday's win over Peter Wright with another top-ten scalp. Henderson made a stunning start with back-to-back 12-darters, hitting 180s in both legs, and he added another maximum in the third only for Whitlock to take out 110 to get off the mark. Henderson fired in a 177 as double six moved him 3-1 up, and he then added a maximum and a 164 checkout in a 12-darter to lead by three legs. Tops moved the Scot to the brink of victory, despite a 180 from Whitlock, and though Australian hit three 140s in a 12-darter to reply, Henderson took out 88 for a 14-darter to complete a fine display.

Steve Beaton remains on course to defend his German Darts Masters title after racing to a 6-2 win over Wes Newton in Berlin. The former World Champion broke throw immediately with a 107 finish, and then scored 180, 140 and 165 to set up double eight for a ten-darter to move two legs up. Newton replied with a 14-darter as he took out a bullseye, double 16 combination, but he missed three darts to level in the fourth as Beaton finished double eight. Double 16 saw Newton cut the gap to one again, but Beaton restored his cushion on tops and capitalised on two further misses from Newton by pinning double 12 to lead 5-2. He then added a second 180 of the game to leave 56 in the eighth leg, and hit tops for a 14-darter to seal the win.

World Champion Michael van Gerwen remains on course for a second successive European Tour victory after hitting five 180s and a 100 average in a 6-3 win over David Pallett, the emerging youngster who played his part in an entertaining contest in Berlin. Van Gerwen hit a 180 as he won the opening leg and added another maximum in leg two, but paid for missing his chance to break throw as Pallett levelled on double one. The Dutch ace then finished 72 for a 14-darter before tops did break throw as he moved 3-1 up - but Pallett hit back to level with legs of 14 and 13 darts. Van Gerwen posted a 180 and tops to restore his lead, before back-to-back 12-darters secured the Dutchman's win, as he firstly responded to a Pallett maximum with two in the eighth leg before defying another 180 from the youngster by finishing 91 to seal victory.
