Frost Bites Back With Double Success

MARK Frost was in irresistible form as he won both events in a PDC Unicorn Challenge Tour double-header at the Ricoh Arena in Coventry.

Frost defeated Prakash Jiwa in a scintillating final to secure his second PDC Challenge Tour title, before then comfortably defeating Steve Douglas 5-1 in the last two of the second event.

It was the second consecutive Challenge Tour weekend in which Frost has tasted victory, having also won in the same venue in July, with the double success also seeing him move up to number one in the Challenge Tour Order of Merit.

Frost started the day in strong form as he stormed past Dave Honey, Curtis Hammond, Ben Songhurst and Michael Beal in his opening four rounds.

A 5-3 win over Darron Brown followed in the quarter-finals before Frost whitewashed Terry Roach 5-0 to book his place in the last two.

Jiwa entered the final in similarly impressive form as he backed up wins over Nathan Derry, Matt Clark in his opening two rounds, with three thumping victories in his following games.

The 44-year-old only dropped three legs against Kevin Bambrick, Michael Burgoine and David Copley to set-up the tasty fixture against Frost, and both players’ form would not desert them in the final.

After swapping blows in the opening exchanges, Frost turned on the style as he first took out 101 to go 2-1 ahead and then hit back-to-back 180s, before eventually finishing with a 12-dart leg to extend his lead.

Frost would then go 4-2 ahead before Jiwa found his form with two sensational ton-plus checkouts in consecutive legs to draw level and take the final into a decider.

The momentum was well and truly with the Indian as he stormed ahead, but just as when it looked as though Frosty had frozen in the final, Jiwa missed five darts at double before the 42-year-old returned to hit double 16 and snatch the win.

Frost started slower in the second event of the day as he edged past Doug Thompson and Ryan Harrington 5-4 in his opening two rounds to set up another game against Jiwa in the last 16.

Unlike their first contest though, the match would prove to be much more comfortable for Frost as he thumped the Indian 5-0.

Two more narrow wins over Joe Lacey and Danny Pinhorne would follow to set up the clash with Douglas who was appearing in first final since joining the PDC circuit this year.

The 36-year-old enjoyed impressive victories over Gaz Cousins, Shaun Griffiths, Matt Dicken, Mark Forman and Colin Fowler en route to the final, but was unable to maintain his form against Frost.

The victory never looked in doubt for Frosty as he raced into a 4-1 lead, including a fantastic 125 checkout in the second leg, before taking out 60 on double tops in the next leg to seal a comfortable 5-1 win and an extremely productive day on the oche.

The PDC Unicorn Challenge Tour will conclude in Wigan on November 2 with the final two events of the year.
