Caven Aims For Blackpool Triumph

JAMIE CAVEN is aiming to upset the odds when he faces reigning BetVictor World Matchplay champion Michael van Gerwen on Saturday's opening night of the 2016 tournament.

World number one van Gerwen followed up his run to the 2014 final in Blackpool by going all the way to glory at the Winter Gardens a year ago, defeating James Wade in the final.

The Dutchman enters this year's event as the 11/10 pre-tournament favourite with sponsors BetVictor, and is 1/20 to defeat Caven in their first round - but the Derby thrower, a 9/1 chance, is looking to produce his best form on Saturday.

"On paper, it is only going one way but the game is not played on paper," Caven told the Derby Telegraph. "It's all down to what happens on the day.

"I'm realistic about it. I know I'm not expected to win but I wouldn't say I'm not expecting to win.

"I feel I'm more than capable of beating him. People might call it an upset – but I wouldn't see it as that. I'm really looking forward to it.

"Michael is the defending champion, so I'm sure there will be a lot of pressure on his shoulders.

"I'm just going to enjoy it. I'll give it my best shot and if I play like I am capable of, I think I've got a good chance."

Caven has only reached the second round once in six previous World Matchplay appearances, but is hoping that he can be inspired by the unique Winter Gardens average.

"It's always brilliant playing at Blackpool and the support is phenomenal," added the 40-year-old. "I've had close games there in the past couple of years – but now I need to turn those performances into a win.

"There's no point worrying about what he can do – I need to focus on what I can do, and I know what I'm capable of."
