2017 PDC Qualifying School Day Three

FORMER World Champions John Part and Richie Burnett joined Scott Taylor and Steve Lennon in securing their Tour Cards on Day Three of the 2017 PDC Qualifying School at the Robin Park Tennis Centre in Wigan. 

In a repeat of the 2008 Alexandra Palace final, three-time World Champion Part faced Kirk Shepherd in a straight shootout for qualification, and rolled back the years as he clinched a 5-2 victory to secure his return to the PDC ProTour.

Canadian legend Part started the day in difficult circumstances as he came through last-leg deciders in his opening three games against Lennart Efraimsson, Duvaan Ata and Richard Calvert, before a 5-2 victory over Ian Withers in his board final.

In the last 32, he faced Barry Lynn - who sent Gary Anderson crashing out of the Coral UK Open in his run to the quarter-finals last March - and progressed with a hard-fought 5-3 victory before seeing off Adam Hunt 5-2 to set up the clash with Shepherd.

With his position on the professional circuit secured once more, Part has now set his sights on a bigger target.

"My real goal in life is to be a four-time World Champion," said the 50-year-old, who was recently inducted into the PDC Hall of Fame.

"I want to get in [The World Championship] at whatever it takes and give myself a shot. That’s what today is all about. It sounds crazy I know, but I just want that chance.

"I'm delighted to get through here but you need some luck, you need to hit shots at the right times. I’m not just a three-time World Champion that powered through this field – there are some fantastic players here, so I am delighted."

Speaking about his rematch of that infamous final against the then unknown Shepherd, Part had some encouraging words for his opponent.

"I was more desperate than he was - he has had a great weekend so far and with the points he’s got he may well get his Tour Card anyway," added Part, "He has done really well and that is a great sign for him.

"It's crazy to think that here we are, nine years later, both fighting for a spot and potentially succeeding."

The day was also memorable for 1995 Lakeside Champion Richie Burnett, who secured his return to the PDC ProTour following a two-year absence, having initially served an 18-month suspension after testing positive for a banned substance in November 2014 before returning to action last year with two PDC Unicorn Challenge Tour wins.

After two early exits this week, he kicked off Day Three with a 5-2 victory over Kevin Lane, before beating German youngster Martin Schindler and Dutch prospect Colin Roelofs 5-4 to reach the last 32.

A 5-0 whitewash against Bernd Roith set the tone, before beating former World Matchplay finalist Ronnie Baxter 5-3 to reach the last eight, where he saw off 2010 Players Championship Finals winner Paul Nicholson 5-3 to secure his Tour Card.

The Welsh star conceded that the experience of competing in Qualifying School has been tough but worthwhile to book his place back on the professional circuit.

“This is the most pressure I've ever been under in all my life," said Burnett. "If I had gone from this place without my Tour Card, I don’t know where I would have ended up.

"I’ve let everybody down in the past, but I have done it now for myself and for everybody that has stuck by me. It has been a long hard road, where I have faced some very difficult times, but it feels great to secure my Tour Card."

Irish youngster Steve Lennon, 23, secured progression from his Qualifying School debut by dropping only ten legs in the day as he won a Tour Card.

After consecutive whitewashes of Dorion Hall and Michael Wood, he quickly saw of Steve Smith 5-2 and Andrew Howarth 5-3 to reach the last 32.

A 5-1 victory over Kevin Garcia followed for Lennon, before he came through a tough test with Welshman Kevin Thomas to reach the last eight. There, he faced Scott Darbyshire, but proved too tough a test as he raced to a 5-2 victory to secure his place on the professional circuit.

“I'm more relieved than anything else," said Lennon, from Carlow. "There are so many good players here and I’m delighted to come through such a hard field."

Bolton's Taylor, who won a Challenge Tour event last May, was the fourth player to secure his Tour Card on Day Three.

After a strong run on Day Two, where he lost out to eventual winner Ting Chi Royden Lam, the 25-year-old was determined to go one better and started the day strongly, edging out Stuart Kellett in his opening match.

He then saw of John Newman and Jason Wilson to reach the last 32, where he faced former European Championship finalist Wayne Jones and progressed with a 5-4 victory.

Next he put a stop to the impressive run of Jamie Bain with a 5-3 win, before producing arguably his best performance in the last eight to beat Spain's Antonio Alcinas 5-1 and secure his Tour Card.

“It’s been great – there isn’t a much better feeling than this," said Taylor.

“The first day was a nightmare, and the second day I lost to Royden Lam – I played out of my skin but he nicked it. To come through today after that disappointment is just a great feeling."

Nicholson's run to the final eight also puts him in a strong position to secure a Tour Card, having now collected 14 points to sit joint fourth on the Qualifying School Order of Merit heading into Day Four.

Shepherd, alongside Bain and Alcinas sit at the top on 15 points and will secure their cards with another strong performance on Day Four.

Four more automatic Tour Cards will be available as the final day of Qualifying School action gets underway on Sunday January 22, along with 12 more being allocated to those on the top of the Order of Merit.
