Van Gerwen's PL rivals have their say on Dutchman's double defeats

Michael van Gerwen

Gary Anderson and Peter Wright have had their say on Michael van Gerwen's back-to-back Unibet Premier League defeats.

Losses to Glen Durrant and Anderson have left Van Gerwen with just one win from his three Unibet Premier League outings since the restart, with the world number one conceding "this is not good enough."

Two-time Premier League champion Anderson became the fourth player to inflict defeat on Van Gerwen this campaign on Judgement Night, leaving the Dutchman in an unfamiliar fourth place heading into the tournament's second phase.

"Michael has been phenomenal for years and years since he won that first title in Dublin," said Anderson.

"He's been on a rollercoaster since then so to keep that going is hard work, let me tell you.

"He's up against tens and tens of players now who can play great darts so it's getting harder for him.

"But he's right up there as number one in history in darts.

"I think Michael and myself were in the same boat last night, it was a case of 'whose worst darts are going to win?'

"The way it's going nobody is running away at the top of the table this time, but that makes it a bit more exciting doesn't it?"

Meanwhile, 2017 Premier League runner-up Wright also commented on Van Gerwen's slip-ups following his 7-4 win over Daryl Gurney.

Wright said: "I think Michael's confidence has been knocked.

"Glen has been playing some great darts and then Gary turned up against him, which he is always capable of doing.

"It's been very hard work for Michael, being in cruise control for many years running away with tournaments and playing awesome darts.

"It's very difficult these days and it goes to show that if you're not quite on your game, you get punished."

Van Gerwen will be looking to avoid a third straight defeat tonight when he takes on Nathan Aspinall as the second phase of the competition gets underway following the elimination of Rob Cross on Judgement Night.

Live coverage will be shown on Sky Sports, as well as through the PDC's international broadcast partners including RTL7 and DAZN and for PDCTV Rest of the World Subscribers.
