Petersen excited ahead of European Tour's Hungarian debut

Devon Petersen is seeing this weekend's inaugural European Tour event in Hungary as a "fantastic opportunity" to continue the sport's growth.

The Hungarian Darts Trophy will be staged in Budapest from September 3-5, with the year's opening European Tour event seeing 48 players competing across the weekend - with coverage streamed via PDCTV.

The event is the first held by the PDC in Hungary and sees Budapest become the latest destination on the European Tour circuit, which will also visit Gibraltar later in September.

While Petersen - a European Tour winner in 2020 - is aiming to star on the oche and commence the autumn campaign in winning fashion, he also believes that the event will show wider benefits for the sport.

"Coming to Hungary is a fantastic opportunity," said Petersen, speaking to Hungarian media. "The PDC and PDC Europe are exploring these new destinations, and if you look at the standard over the previous European Tours, you can see the standard increasing.

"With every event, it just gets better and you can see that the European events now are mimicking the major events.

"The people that are in the back-end of the tournaments are generally the guys that perform the best over the majors as well.

"It's almost a curtain-raiser to your major events and a spectacle; you've got Peter Wright just coming off a victory at the World Matchplay - he's been playing really well - and you've got Gerwyn Price, Joe Cullen, Michael Smith, Nathan Aspinall, Jose de Sousa, all of these top quality players coming to Hungary and showing their talent.

"They'll give people in Hungary an opportunity to see what the players could mimic and grow the sport further in Hungary."

Petersen will enter the Hungarian Darts Trophy in Saturday's second round as one of the 16 seeded stars, with Friday's first round featuring the 32 qualifiers competing across two sessions.

The Hungarian Darts Trophy will be streamed through PDCTV and bookmakers' websites worldwide. PDCTV subscription options will include Event Pass and Day Pass packages, alongside Annual and Monthly Subscriptions.
