Aspinall, Humphries & Rock secure Cazoo Grand Slam qualification

Nathan Aspinall

Nathan Aspinall, Luke Humphries and Josh Rock have joined the list of confirmed qualifiers for the 2022 Cazoo Grand Slam of Darts, with 11 places in the November event still up for grabs.

Former Grand Slam quarter-finalist Aspinall, who missed out on last year's event, secured his return by finishing runner-up at last week's World Grand Prix in Leicester.

Four-time 2022 European Tour event winner Humphries' place in the tournament is now locked in due to just one new qualifier coming from the World Grand Prix, with just the European Championship remaining for players to secure automatic qualification as a TV event finalist.

Northern Irish sensation Rock qualifies via finishing second on the Winmau Development Tour Order of Merit, as Order of Merit winner Nathan Rafferty's had already qualified as 2021 World Youth Championship runner-up.

A total of 21 players are now guaranteed places in this year's Grand Slam, which will see 32 players competing in group and knockout stages for the Eric Bristow Trophy and £650,000 in prize money from November 12-20 at Wolverhampton's Aldersley Leisure Village.

Reigning champion Gerwyn Price, who sealed his third Grand Slam crown in 2021, headlines this year’s field alongside World Champion Peter Wright and three-time winner Michael van Gerwen.

The finalists from PDC televised events over a 12-month period will make up 16 places at this year’s Grand Slam, with 13 of those spots currently occupied.

Price, Wright and Van Gerwen are among the players to have won televised events during the qualifying period, alongside Masters champion Joe Cullen and UK Open winner Danny Noppert.

Damon Heta and Simon Whitlock will also feature after guiding Australia to their maiden Cazoo World Cup of Darts success in Frankfurt earlier this month.

World Championship runner-up Michael Smith has sealed his spot, with Dave Chisnall, Ryan Searle and Jonny Clayton also amongst the current qualifiers after reaching TV finals in the past year.

Jose De Sousa, the Grand Slam champion in 2020, has yet to book his Wolverhampton return, while James Wade and Gary Anderson are also battling to preserve their ever-present records in the tournament.

The European Championship will provide one final opportunity for players to seal qualification through televised events for the finalists.

However, if the 16 places are not filled from the televised events, winners from the 2022 PDC European Tour and then Players Championship events could also secure Grand Slam spots.

At present, Rob Cross and Brendan Dolan are provisional qualifiers from Players Championship events with six Players Championship events still to take place, while the Gibraltar Darts Trophy (ET13) will be the year's last European Tour event.

A further eight players will come through the PDC Tour Card Holder Qualifier on November 6, before the 32-player field is completed with an additional eight qualifiers.

Women's World Matchplay champion Fallon Sherrock, Women's Series Order of Merit qualifier Lisa Ashton and reigning World Youth champion Ted Evetts are among the Additional Qualifiers.

North American Champion Leonard Gates and Asian Championship winner Christian Perez are both in line to make their debuts in a PDC Premier event.

The Winmau Challenge Tour Order of Merit winner will also join the list of qualifiers following this weekend's conclusion of the season.
