Cazoo Grand Slam of Darts: Top Five Moments

Gerwyn Price (PDC)

The 2022 Cazoo Grand Slam of Darts begins in Wolverhampton on Saturday, as reigning champion Gerwyn Price bids to lift the coveted Eric Bristow Trophy for a fourth time in five years.

The £650,000 event will see 32 players in action at the Aldersley Leisure Village from November 12-20, with World Champion Peter Wright and three-time champion Michael van Gerwen also among the leading contenders.

As the countdown to this year's showpiece continues, we take a look back at five of the most memorable Grand Slam of Darts moments...

5. Wonderful Wade achieves perfection

James Wade (Lawrence Lustig/PDC)

James Wade has been on the receiving end of more televised nine-darters than any other player, but the left-hander has also landed his share of perfect legs on the big stage.

Wade famously registered the first nine-darter in Grand Slam history during his last 16 clash against Gary Anderson in 2008 – only to succumb to the Scot in a thrilling tussle.

It would be six years until another player achieved perfection in Wolverhampton, while Wade has since fired in nine-dart legs at the World Grand Prix, World Championship and UK Open.

4. Barney wins epic Dutch derby

Raymond van Barneveld (Lawrence Lustig/PDC)

Raymond van Barneveld ended his five-year wait for an individual PDC televised title with a thrilling victory over his compatriot Michael van Gerwen in the 2012 final.

The Dutchman had endured an unexpected trophy drought after lifting the 2007 Las Vegas Desert Classic final, losing out to Phil Taylor in successive World Grand Prix finals and the 2010 World Matchplay showpiece.

However, the five-time World Champion produced an inspired display to claim a 16-14 victory over Van Gerwen in a spectacular contest, and a decade on from his famous victory, Van Barneveld will make his Wolverhampton return after coming through last weekend’s qualifier.

3. Huybrechts’ Wolverhampton heroics

Kim Huybrechts (Lawrence Lustig/PDC)

Kim Huybrechts produced arguably the performance of his career to stun Michael van Gerwen 16-10 in the 2014 quarter-finals at the Wolverhampton Civic Hall.

Huybrechts fired in the first televised nine-darter of his career – the second in Grand Slam history – to complete a landmark victory over the Dutchman, averaging 104.8 in the process.

The Belgian was denied by Dave Chisnall in a dramatic last-leg decider in the semi-finals, but his performance against Van Gerwen saw him receive a Premier League Darts debut the following year.

2. Price & Anderson’s infamous final

Gerwyn Price (Lawrence Lustig/PDC)

Gerwyn Price’s love affair with the Grand Slam began in 2018, when the Welshman defeated Gary Anderson in an infamous final to lift his first televised crown.

Price prevailed 16-13 in a highly-charged contest to become the first Welshman to win a PDC televised title, and he’s since established himself as one of the sport’s premier players.

The 37-year-old claimed further Grand Slam glory in 2019 and 2021, and the 2021 World Champion is now eyeing his fourth consecutive triumph at the Aldersley Leisure Village.

1. Greatest Game Ever?

Adrian Lewis & Phil Taylor (Lawrence Lustig/PDC)

The 2013 semi-final showdown between Phil Taylor and Adrian Lewis was hailed by many darts fans as the greatest match of all time.

Taylor and Lewis averaged 109.76 and 110.99 respectively, with Lewis landing an astonishing 18 maximums in defeat, despite leading 8-7 at one stage.

However, an imperious Taylor won eight of the last nine legs to complete a convincing 16-9 victory, and the 16-time World Champion went on to lift the Grand Slam for a fifth time, dispatching Robert Thornton in a one-sided final.
