Adrian Lewis has announced that he intends to take a break from competing in tournaments.

The two-time World Champion has recently withdrawn from competing in the German Darts Grand Prix and events on the Players Championship circuit, having last competed in mid-March.

The 38-year-old is to step back from competition for a period, having announced the decision on social media on Saturday.

He wrote: "Dear all, in particular my fans, I feel that your loyalty deserves an explanation for my absence from tournaments.

"After 20+ years I feel I need a break from the professional circuit for now.

"Massive thanks for the support from my fans & sponsors @TargetDarts @stokemotorcycle.

"Also I'd like to thank @OfficialPDC @PDPA_darts for the opportunity and last but not least my family.

"Cheers folks Ade"

Lewis initially broke onto the circuit in 2004 and alongside his two Alexandra Palace triumphs has won four World Cup of Darts titles, the UK Open and European Championship during a stellar career to date.
