Dutch duo Plaisier & Van Schie share Challenge Tour titles

Wesley Plaisier (PDC)

Dutch duo Jimmy van Schie and Wesley Plaisier were the latest players to claim Winmau Challenge Tour titles in Milton Keynes on Saturday.

Saturday's double-header saw Events 18-19 take place at the Marshall Arena, as Plaisier returned to winning ways to overhaul Connor Scutt at the top of the Challenge Tour Order of Merit.

It was also a memorable day for emerging star Van Schie, who defied a late fightback from Daniel Ayres in the Event 18 showpiece to secure his maiden Challenge Tour title.

The 30-year-old registered a 108.85 average during Friday's Event 16, and he continued his fine form on Saturday, producing legs of 11, 12 and 14 darts against Ayres to pocket the £2,500 top prize.

Van Schie opened his challenge with a brace of 5-2 wins against Michael Baker and Kai Gotthardt, before denying Event 16 winner Alexander Merkx to reach the last 16.

The towering Dutchman then recorded impressive 5-3 victories over Sweden's Anton Ostlund and Cam Crabtree to advance to the semi-finals, where he demolished his compatriot Dennie Olde Kalter en route to glory.

Van Schie extended his remarkable winning run to 13 matches with wins over the likes of Ted Evetts, Darius Labanauskas and Ostlund in Event 19, although his bid for back-to-back titles was thwarted by Plaisier in the semi-finals.

Plaisier raced into the last eight with a trio of whitewash wins against Brian Verhelst, Reece Colley and Niall Culleton, while also winning through encounters against Peter Jacques and David Davies.

The 34-year-old claimed the scalp of 2012 World Championship runner-up Andy Hamilton in the quarter-finals, and after accounting for Van Schie, he reeled off three straight legs to topple Lee Cocks 5-3 in the Event 19 decider.

Cocks dumped out former Grand Slam champion Scott Waites and Scottish veteran Andy Boulton to scoop the £1,000 runner-up prize, while Ayres conceded just 12 legs in his run to the Event 18 final earlier in the day.

The 2024 Winmau Challenge Tour resumes on Sunday August 18, as the year's fourth weekend of action concludes with Event 20 at the Marshall Arena.

The top two players from the final 2024 Challenge Tour Order of Merit will secure a PDC Tour Card for 2025/26 and a place in the 2024/25 Paddy Power World Darts Championship.

Plaisier boasts a slender £650 lead over Scutt at the top of the Challenge Tour Order of Merit after celebrating his second title of 2024, while van Schie has climbed to sixth following his exploits on Saturday.
