Imperious Smith completes clean sweep on opening weekend of ADA Tour

Raymond Smith (PDC)

Raymond Smith enjoyed a dream start to the inaugural Australian Darts Association Tour last weekend, winning all four events in Queensland.

The opening weekend of the newly created Australian Darts Association Tour saw Events 1-4 take place from June 27-29, with over 70 players in action across three days of competition.

Smith made his name in PDC circles with a superb run to the last 16 of the 2021/22 World Darts Championship, defeating Jamie Hughes, Devon Petersen and Florian Hempel in the process.

The 45-year-old – also a winner of nine DPA ProTour titles – dominated proceedings from start to finish in Queensland, winning 23 consecutive matches to complete an astonishing quartet of titles.

Smith defeated former World Series of Darts qualifier Tim Pusey in three of the weekend’s four finals, running out a 6-2 winner in Friday’s Event One showpiece.

This was preceded by a ruthless whitewash victory over Mal Cuming in the semi-finals, after he averaged 100 and 97 in wins against Jordan Lacey and Gordon Mathers respectively.

Smith then celebrated back-to-back titles on Saturday, overcoming Stuart Coburn and James Bailey before closing out a battling 6-3 success against Pusey to claim the Event Two spoils.

The Brisbane-born star also averaged 102.48 in his last 16 whitewash of Andrew Jeffrey – marking his best statistical performance of the weekend.

Smith’s imperious run showed no sign of relenting as he stormed through to the Event Three decider in style, conceding just six legs in five matches.

However, he was forced to survive a match dart in edging out Ben Robb, defying a spirited fightback from the New Zealander to complete the hat-trick on home soil.

Sunday’s Event Four followed a similar pattern, as Smith swept through to the quarter-finals with successive whitewash wins against Ben Justice and Jacob Pattison.

Smith survived a major scare in his last eight clash against Robbie King, recovering from 5-3 down to book his place in the semi-finals, after King spurned a multitude of opportunities to progress.

Nevertheless, normal service was resumed as Smith romped to a 6-1 victory over Cuming in the last four, before averaging 95 to dispatch Pusey 6-2 and secure the Event Four crown.

The winner of the ADA Australian Tour will earn a spot in the 2025/26 Paddy Power World Darts Championship, where an expanded 128-player field will compete for an incredible £1m top prize.

Smith is in pole position to claim top spot on the ADA Order of Merit, and he will have the opportunity to extend his lead further when the second weekend of ADA Tour action takes place in Adelaide from August 1-3.
