Gian van Veen has stormed into the world’s top eight following his incredible Machineseeker European Championship triumph on Sunday.
Van Veen denied world number one Luke Humphries in a last-leg thriller to scoop the £120,000 top prize in Dortmund, which sees him climb eight places to a career-high of world number seven.
The World Youth Champion was imperious throughout the weekend at the Westfalenhalle, also overcoming Damon Heta, Ryan Searle, Ryan Joyce and his Dutch rival Michael van Gerwen to celebrate his maiden televised ranking title.
Despite missing out on a ninth Premier PDC title, Humphries’ run to Sunday’s showpiece was enough to retain his world number one status, following Luke Littler’s Round Two defeat at the hands of James Wade.
Chris Dobey has relinquished his place in the world’s top ten after also succumbing in Round Two against Van Gerwen, while Gerwyn Price has slipped two places to 13th following his opening round exit in Dortmund.
However, two-time World Champion Peter Wright has dropped 12 places to world number 30 following his 6-2 defeat against 2022 champion Ross Smith.
Wright was defending £120,000 in prize money on the two-year system following his European Championship success in 2023, and as a result, the Scottish icon has slipped to his lowest ranking position since 2011.
