David Munyua hopes to have ‘united’ the continent of Africa with his performances at this year’s Paddy Power World Darts Championship.

Munyua caused one of the biggest upsets in World Championship history with a 3-2 comeback victory over Mike De Decker in round one, although his fairytale journey came to an end on Monday Afternoon, following a straight-sets defeat against Kevin Doets.

The Kenyan was gracious in defeat, conceding that the better player went through at London’s Alexandra Palace.

“I tried my best, but Kevin was much better than me today. I wish him the best,” said Munyua, who fought back from 2-0 down to eliminate De Decker in his opener.

“It is amazing, the exposure that I have got, and playing quality players like Kevin and Mike makes it all worthwhile.

“Winning the first round was phenomenal for me, and with this being my first time at Ally Pally, I have done my best, and I am happy with that."

Munyua went out of the tournament with a fight, showcasing his credentials with , but in the end, world number 40 Doets was too strong for the man he described as the new ‘people’s champion’.

However, for Munyua, he has achieved what he wanted at this year’s tournament, with the growth of the sport now noticeable in Kenya, and in other parts of Africa.

“Just appearing at Ally Pally is doing a lot,” added the 30-year-old.

“No one knew what was going on back home, but now everyone is aware of what is happening.”

This can be seen through the President of Kenya, William Samoei Ruto, congratulating Munyua on his victory over Belgian number one De Decker last week.

The President insisted ‘the nation stands behind’ him, and this is something Munyua echoed after his exit, highlighting how this past week could be vital for uniting the whole continent of Africa.

“If we could have different countries from Africa (at the tournament), that would be impressive,” Munyua claimed.

“If Munyua is doing it why not them? From Cameroon, Nigeria, Namibia, South Africa, Tanzania.

“There is nothing that could unite Africa more than sport, sport is the only activity that can join us.”
