Burnley’s Kaya Baysal celebrated JDC Winmau Junior World Masters glory with a straight-sets victory over Mitchell Lawrie in Milton Keynes on Sunday.
The pair went head-to-head in a repeat of last month’s JDC Junior World Championship final, as Baysal produced a clinical display to avenge his defeat against the Scottish star at Alexandra Palace.
There was little to separate the pair in the opening exchanges, with Baysal drawing first blood on tops, before Lawrie levelled with a two-dart 89 combination.
However, despite missing tops for an eye-catching 120 checkout, the young Englishman clinched the opening set after Lawrie missed a dart at double nine for an 83 combination.
Baysal then strengthened his grip on proceedings with a brilliant 121 on the bull to break and seize the initiative in set two, before punishing a hat-trick of missed opportunities from the Scot to seal the deal on tops.
“It feels amazing to win this competition for the first time,” reflected Baysal, who averaged 89.37 to triumph at Arena MK.
“To win a title on the big stage, this means a lot.
“I’m sure me and Mitchell will have a rivalry for years to come. We play each other more and more every week, and hopefully we can keep these performances up.
“When I turn 16, I’ll probably go to Q School next year, but I just want to keep doing what I’m doing.”
Baysal and Lawrie came through the early rounds of the Junior World Masters in Aylesbury on Saturday, battling through a 256-player field to confirm their spots in Sunday’s showpiece.
Baysal remarkably didn’t drop a single set in Saturday’s early rounds, averaging over 97 to see off CJ Ayres in the quarter-finals, before averaging 100.2 to dispatch Jack Nankervis in the last four.
Lawrie, meanwhile, also made serene progress, dumping out JDC National Volts champion Jack Johnson in the last eight, which he followed with a comeback win over Harley Glycos in the semi-finals.
