Austrian To Make World Championship Bow

AUSTRIA'S Anton Pein has won the final International place in the Ladbrokes.com World Darts Championship.

Pein was victorious in Saturday's German Qualifying competition, and will join 63 other players in the £500,000 tournament next month.

The 39-year-old from Klagenfurt completes the field of 16 International Representatives, and will become the first Austrian to compete at the Circus Tavern.

They will be joined by 16 PDPA Qualifiers in the first round at Purfleet, where they come up against the world's top 32.

Pein overcame Herbert Biendl 8-6 in the final of the German Qualifier, battling through from 128 players to take first place.

He opened his account with a 5-0 whitewash of Roland Schmidt, before seeing off Thomas Mayer, Michael Rosenauer, Hannes Schneir, Alexander Kohler and Harry Barth to reach the final.

Andree Welge had put himself on course to qualify for a second successive year, but lost in the last eight to Barth.

Pein was the 2005 Austrian Open champion and has won a host of soft-tip titles, including the World and European Championship at both Singles and Team level.

The event in Germany was also attended by 13-time World Champion Phil Taylor, current World Number One Colin Lloyd and five-time World Champion Eric Bristow.

Taylor and Lloyd faced off in an exhibition before "The Power" also faced German star Alexander Kohler at soft-tip darts.
