Blue Square UK Open Fourth Round

RESULTS and a round-up from Saturday afternoon's fourth round at the Blue Square UK Open

First set of games
PHIL TAYLOR hit his FOURTH Bolton nine-darter in sweeping to a 9-1 win against Jamie Harvey.

Taylor achieved the feat in 2004, 2005 and 2007, and made it four at the Reebok Stadium with 180, 177 and a 144 finish to take a £25,000 bonus - which would be shared should another player match the nine-darter during the remainder of the tournament.

Harvey actually took the lead as Taylor started slowly, and the Scot missed a bullseye in leg two as Taylor levelled. The nine-darter saw the two-time Bolton winner move 8-1 up, and he sealed the win swiftly.

On stage two, World Champion John Part showed great battling qualities to take a 9-6 win over Terry Jenkins.

Part trailed 3-1 but took advantage of Jenkins' missed doubles to take three in a row and move ahead, and winning four of the last five legs put the Canadian through.

St Helens' Alan Tabern - a semi-finalist two years ago - moved into the last 16 with a 9-6 win over Holsten Qualifier Robert Thornton.

Thornton, who kicked off on Thursday in round one against Anastasia Dobromyslova and also knocked out Michael van Gerwen to reach the last 32, hit back from 3-1 down to level at four-all, but Tabern pulled clear in the second half of the contest.

Wayne Jones produced a superb display to see off Wales' Barrie Bates 9-2. The Wolverhampton man was a big winner against Kirk Shepherd on Friday, and never looked back after taking a 5-1 lead against Bates, who had won the game's opening leg.

Second set of games
SCOTT WAITES' brave challenge was finally ended by Ronnie Baxter with a 9-6 defeat.

Waites, one of the 32 Holsten Qualifiers, had battled through four matches after opening in Thursday's Preliminary Round before finding his match in Baxter.

The Yorkshireman led 4-2 after losing the opening two legs of the game, but four legs in a row put Baxter ahead and he eventually took victory 9-6.

World number three James Wade maintained his challenge with a 9-5 win over Bristol's Steve Brown, taking the last three legs without reply to book his spot in Saturday night's fifth round.

Wes Newton edged another tight contest to move into the fifth round, following up a 9-8 win over Mervyn King with a 9-7 defeat of Mark Walsh.

There was never anything between the pair until Newton took two successive legs to leap past the winning post.

Northern Ireland's Brendan Dolan snatched an amazing win over Adrian Lewis, who led throughout their contest and took an 8-6 cushion but failed to kill off the match.

Dolan won the final three legs to sneak his place in the next round.

Third set of games
RAYMOND VAN BARNEVELD held off a spirited challenge from Ireland's Jason Barry to remain on course for a third successive UK Open title.

The Dutchman looked on course for a comfortable win when he led 5-1 and 6-3, only for Barry to level with finishes 128 and 140.

Van Barneveld moved 8-6 up before a 125 checkout kept the Irishman in the hunt, but the world number one broke his opponent's throw to seal victory.

Andy Hamilton overcame Chris Mason in a hard-fought contest to take a 9-6 victory, maintaining his advantage after a key break of throw in leg ten, to go 6-4 up, proved crucial.

America's Gary Mawson produced a superb finish to his contest with Yorkshireman Mark Lawrence to take a 9-4 win.

The pair were locked a three-all, but Mawson took six of the next seven to move into the hat for the last 16.

York's Chris Thompson reached the last 16 with a 9-5 win over Steve Maish on board four, which included a 170 finish from the newcomer.

The first half of the contest was even, with the pair trading legs to be locked at five-all before the solicitor's clerk took four in a row to power through.

Fourth set of games
MARK DUDBRIDGE fought off Peter Manley to reach the last 16 for a second successive year thanks to a 9-7 victory.

A see-saw game saw Dudbridge take early leads of 2-0 and 4-2 only to allow Manley to level, and missed darts at double top proved costly for the Bristolian in leg ten - wasting a chance to go 6-4 up as Manley squared the game again and then moved ahead 6-5.

Manley also led 7-6, but Dudbridge levelled, produced an 11-darter to regain the lead and then sealed the win on double four.

Holland's Jelle Klaasen booked his place in round five with a 9-3 win over Stoke's Nigel Birch.

Klaasen took a 3-0 lead before Birch hit back to 3-2, but the former Lakeside champion won six of the next seven to move through.

Simon Whatley's great run of form continued with a strong comeback to see off Steve Smith 9-6.

Yeovil's Whatley trailed 3-1 before winning seven of the next nine legs to move 8-5 up.

Smith, from Essex, took the 14th leg to stay in the game, but Whatley was quick to wrap up the win.

Final game
VINCENT VAN DER VOORT edged a final-leg thriller against Colin Osborne to remain on course for a second successive final.

The duo shared an 11-10 classic in last year's semi-final, and again could hardly be separated in a brilliant contest.

Osborne landed an 11-darter to lead 2-1 early on, before van der Voort took a 5-2 lead.

They shared ton-plus finishes of 117 and 116 as Osborne pulled back to 6-4, but van der Voort's doubles crucially led him down as the Englishman began to fought back.

Van der Voort squandered a chance to lead 8-5, and Osborne took full advantage with four straight legs to move himself 8-7 up.

But two missed darts for the match at double 18 in leg 16 allowed van der Voort to send the match into a decider, and he was too strong with three ton-plus scores and a 71 checkout to seal his last 16 place.
