CANADIAN Gerry Convery reached round two of the Ladbrokes.com World Darts Championship for the second successive year with a 3-0 win over Dave Askew.

The Canadian national champion reached the third round 12 months ago and remains on course to at least match that feat following an eventually comfortable victory.

He won all three sets 3-1 to send Askew out at the first hurdle for the third straight year.

"It's never easy but I felt comfortable up there," said Convery. "Dave wasn't at his best today and I took advantage.

"The more you play the Brits - because they are the best - it helps your game and I'm seeing the results now.

"I'm always learning and one thing I've learned over the years is 'Never miss your doubles'. That worked today."

Convery was born in Northern Ireland before moving to Canada aged 21, and he revealed: "I'm going to try and catch a flight (to Belfast) and it will be the first time in 28 years I've spent Christmas with my mum."
