Classic Deller Defeats Magnum

KEITH DELLER rolled back the years to defeat Steve Beaton and move into the second day of the Budweiser UK Open at Bolton's Reebok Stadium.

Deller, the 1983 World Champion, produced some vintage darts to overturn deficits of 4-1 and 6-3 against Steve Beaton.

He pulled level with a 94 checkout, finishing on the bull, before a neat two-dart finish on 57 put him 7-6 up.

Deller then landed double eight to win the match and move into the third round - where the likes of Phil Taylor, Colin Lloyd and Raymond van Barneveld will enter the tournament on Saturday.

"I'm determined to do well in this tournament," said Deller. "I missed out on the World Championship last December and that really hurt me.

"Nobody will forget me winning in 1983 against Eric Bristow, but want to do something in a major tournament again and this is my chance."

Deller will be joined in the third round by 2004 UK Open champion Roland Scholten, who safely overcame Vic Hubbard 8-3 in his opening clash.

Scholten will now face 2006 World Championship finalist Peter Manley in the heavyweight clash of round three.

Rising star Adrian Gray, from East Sussex, defeated established star Dennis Smith 8-5 in one of the shocks of the first day.

Gary Noonan - a postman from London - won through games against Bolton local Paul Williams and Darren Williams and was rewarded with a clash against defending champion Phil Taylor in the third round.

Two pub qualifiers who came through a series of knockouts held in Greene King houses around the UK will join 62 players from the professional circuit in round three.

London Underground emergency response worker Lee Topper defeated Peter Hall and Stuart Pickles to progress to round three, and Kent's Geoff Harkup won against Chris Hill and Steve Johnson.

"It wasn't easy for me but I'm delighted," said Topper, the 1986 Dutch Open winner who meets Andrew Hamilton in the next round.

"There were nerves up there and it is hot on stage. I'm just a pub player, but this is the UK Open and I can't wait for tomorrow."

World number one Colin Lloyd, the tournament's top seed, faces former World Grand Prix champion Alan Warriner-Little in another big second round match.

Dutchman Raymond van Barneveld will begin his challenge for his first major PDC title against Yeovil's Simon Whatley, while former World Champions Richie Burnett and Bob Anderson also clash.
