ALEX ROY became the latest big name to be knocked out of the Ladbrokes.com World Darts Championship, going down 3-2 to qualifier Alan Tabern.

St Helens thrower Tabern was making his Purfleet debut, but showed no nerves in taking the first set 3-0.

Roy hit back and took the second set without reply, Tabern paying the price for missed doubles before edging the third set 3-2.

Roy managed to take the game into a decider by sneaking the fourth set 3-2, a 180 in the final leg setting up double ten.

However, Tabern regathered himself and won the final set 3-1, checking out 76 for the biggest win of his career.

"It's not really sunk in yet," he admitted. "It should feel like the best win of my life, but I didn't play like I wanted to and I'm disappointed with that.

"However, if you said before that I would beat someone of Alex's calibre I'd have taken that, so I'm very pleased.

"The first set gave me the belief that I could do it against such a good player. Hopefully I'll relax now and enjoy my next game.

"I'll be confident of playing well against Mark Dudbridge and I'm looking forward to it."

Roy said: "I didn't know much about him before today because he's new to the PDC, but I expected him to have a few nerves and he didn't.

"I was more nervous myself, I was shaking like a leaf in that first set and that's probably what let me down in the end."
