Upsets Rage At Budweiser UK Open

ANDY CALLABY, Barrie Bates and John MAGowan produced shocks to move into the last eight of the Budweiser UK Open alongside Raymond van Barneveld on Sunday.

Callaby, who reached the quarter-finals of the 2004 World Grand Prix, has returned to form in style in the UK Open, working his way through the field from round two.

He came from 4-0 down to defeat former UK Open finalist Part 11-9 in a thriller to progress to the quarter-finals.

"If I'd gone 5-0 down I don't think I could have come back, so winning the fifth leg was crucial for me," he admitted. "It all came good from there."

Welshman Barrie Bates, who has won two events on the PDC circuit this year, overcame 2004 champion Roland Scholten in style with an 11-5 win.

And Northern Irishman John MaGowan, who turned 65 on Saturday, continued his run with a superb comeback from 4-1 down against young gun Adrian Lewis.

He ran out an 11-8 winner, and admitted: "I had to dig in and claw my way back, and you never know what will happen now."

Dutchman Raymond van Barneveld continued his impressive form with an 11-3 victory over Bob Anderson in the other game of the first phase in round five.

Liverpool's Robbie Green, ranked 115 in the world coming into the tournament, defeated Terry Jenkins 11-6 to progress to the last eight for the first time.

Defending champion Phil Taylor punished poor finishing from Colin Lloyd to win 11-2, a victory which will move him back to the number one spot in the world rankings.

The final two games saw two further players from the world's top 12 crash out, with Ronnie Baxter and Denis Ovens losing to Alex Roy and Alan Tabern.
