World Cup - Second Round

PHIL TAYLOR and James Wade were sensationally dumped from the Cash Converters World Cup by Spanish assassins Carlos Rodriguez and Antonio Alcinas at the Rainton Meadows Arena on Friday night.

Spain had defeated Japan to win through to the second round of the tournament, and Rodriguez and Alcinas produced the performances of their lives to snatch victory in a deciding leg.

Spain trailed 4-2 before winning three in a row to edge in front, and both players hit 180s in the decider, which Alcinas won for an 11-dart leg.

Australia, the number three seeds represented by Simon Whitlock and Paul Nicholson, narrowly avoiding an upset when they edged out Irish pair Mick McGowan and William O'Connor 6-5, but Northern Ireland were knocked out by Austria.

The Austrians were inspired by Mensur Suljovic, who hit three 180s and a 121 finish, although Maik Langendorf's dream debut in a televised event continued in style.

Darin Young hit five 180s for the USA in their 6-4 win over Sweden, while Barrie Bates landed the winning double for Wales in all six legs of their defeat of New Zealand.

Canada were also narrow winners, with John Part and Ken MacNeil edging out the Belgian pair of Patrick Bulen and Rocco Maes in a deciding leg.

Scottish pair Gary Anderson and Robert Thornton proved too strong for Russia's Anastasia Dobromyslova and Roman Konchikov, while the Netherlands, who are the number two seeds comprised of Raymond van Barneveld and Co Stompe, defeated Germany 6-2.

The remaining eight nations are now split into two four-team groups for Saturday's play, with the Netherlands, Australia, Canada and Austria playing off in Group A in the afternoon session.

Spain will take on the USA, Wales and Scotland on Saturday evening in Group B, with matches seeing two Singles games and one Doubles game played over the best of five legs in the Loser Starts format.

CANADA 6-5 BELGIUM
CANADIAN pair John Part and Ken MacNeil rode their luck before sneaking past Belgium 6-5 and into the last eight of the Cash Converters World Cup of Darts.

Belgium followed up their first round win over Finland with a spirited display to lead 3-2 against Canada, who then hit back to lead 5-3.

But when Part and MacNeil failed to close out victory the Belgians hit back to force a decider, only for Patrick Bulen to then miss one match dart as Canada prevailed.

Three-time World Champion Part began in style by hitting a 180 and double top to win the first leg, but Belgium hit a brace of double tops to edge 2-1 up.

Part finished 103 in the next, but missed tops to steal the fifth as Maes checked out double one for a 3-2 cushion.

Maes also hit a 180 in the sixth, but MacNeil finished 68 in two darts to level before Part checked out 64 in two to give the Canadians a 4-3 lead.

Part hit a 180 in the next before sweeping up after misses from MacNeil and Bulen to move the Canadians a leg away from victory.

Maes hit double eight to win the ninth, and when Canada wasted their chance to seal the win in the tenth it was Bulen who stepped in double 16 to force a decider.

The Belgians also held the advantage, but when Bulen missed double 16 for the match MacNeil held his nerve to finish 70 on double ten to take the win.

USA 6-4 SWEDEN
AMERICAN pair Darin Young and Bill Davis denied Sweden a place in the last eight of the Cash Converters World Cup of Darts with a 6-4 victory, as Darin Young hit five 180s before Bill Davis sealed the win.

Sweden, who had defeated Slovenia earlier in the day, continued their momentum by taking a 2-1 lead early on, opening the match with scores of 140 and 180 and with Magnus Caris hitting double five and double top to take two of the opening three legs.

Young had opened America's account in the second, and hit double two to level in the fourth before posting a 180 in leg five.

Riihonen missed double top and double 15 to take the leg, with Davis posting double 16 to give the American's the lead for the first time at 3-2.

Caris hit double 16 to level, but Young hit 180s and the winning double in the next two as the Americans moved 5-3 up, and also landed a maximum in the ninth only for both him and Davis to miss match darts as Caris kept the game alive on double ten.

Young, though, produced a fifth maximum to give the USA the advantage in the next, and Davis finally landed the killer blow with double ten.

AUSTRIA 6-3 NORTHERN IRELAND
AUSTRIA produced the first big shock of the Cash Converters World Cup of Darts, knocking out number seven seeds Northern Ireland with a 6-3 victory.

The Austrian duo of Mensur Suljovic and Maik Langendorf followed up their first round win over Denmark with another fine team display to see off Brendan Dolan and John MaGowan.

Although MaGowan gave Northern Ireland the lead on double top, Dolan missed double five for a 121 finish in the second and the Austrians capitalised, with Langendorf hitting tops to level and Suljovic following a 180 with double ten for a 2-1 lead.

Suljovic then took out 121 on the bull to push his side 3-1 up, and missed double 13 for a 146 checkout in the next, as Dolan hit a third-dart double eight to pull back to 3-2.

Langendorf took out 80 for the sixth leg, and after MaGowan hit double 18 for the seventh he took out double four to put Austria 5-3 up.

Suljovic then hit a 180 for a second successive leg to push his team ahead, and after Langendorf set up a finish with a 126 score he returned to hit double ten for the win.

WALES 6-4 NEW ZEALAND
WALES hit back from 3-1 down to defeat New Zealand 6-4 and win their place in the group stage of the Cash Converters World Cup of Darts.

The Kiwis, represented by Phillip Hazel and Warren Parry, followed up their afternoon win over Poland with a great start to take command against Mark Webster and Barrie Bates.

While Wales took the opening leg, as Bates landed double five after earlier misses from Webster and Hazel, it was the Kiwis who made the early running.

Hazel took out 76 to level in the second and 141 to win the third leg, while Parry landed double 16 in the fourth for a 3-1 lead.

Webster posted double a 180 for a second successive leg in the fifth, with Bates following that up with a 126 bullseye finish to stop the run.

Double ten and double 16 from Bates saw the Welsh move ahead before New Zealand took the eighth to square the match.

However, Bates posted tops for a 5-4 lead, and then finished 88 on the bull for victory.

SCOTLAND 6-2 RUSSIA
SCOTLAND powered into the last eight of the Cash Converters World Cup of Darts, with Gary Anderson and Robert Thornton defeating Russia 6-2 in their second round clash.

The Scots made a brilliant start, with Anderson matching a 180 from Anastasia Dobromyslova in the opening leg before Thornton took out 121 for a 12-darter.

Roman Konchikov had a chance to take the second, with a missed double 13 allowing Thornton in, only for his miss at tops to give Dobromyslova her chance on double six.

Anderson posted double two before the former Women's World Champion finished double eight to pull back to 3-2 and cause some nervy moments for the Scots.

However, they rallied in style, with Anderson finishing double 12 for a 13-dart finish and then taking out 101 before double two secured a 6-2 victory.

NETHERLANDS 6-2 GERMANY
CO STOMPE and Raymond van Barneveld teamed up superbly to defeat Germany 6-2 and earn their place in the group stage of the Cash Converters World Cup of Darts.

The Dutch pair stormed into a 4-0 lead against Jyhan Artut and Andree Welge, who rallied briefly but were unable to perform a miracle comeback.

While Stompe hit the big scores early in the game, including a 180 in the first leg and a 170 to leave 36 in the fourth, van Barneveld landed the doubles to take the opening four and put Holland in command.

Welge put the Germans onto the scoreboard in the fifth, and after two missed doubles from Stompe in the next landed double four to halve the gap.

Stompe, though, eased Dutch nerves on double five for a 5-2 lead, before taking out 80 in two darts to complete victory.

SPAIN 6-5 ENGLAND
PHIL TAYLOR and James Wade were sensationally dumped from the Cash Converters World Cup by Spanish assassins Carlos Rodriguez and Antonio Alcinas at the Rainton Meadows Arena on Friday night.

Spain had defeated Japan to win through to the second round of the tournament, and Rodriguez and Alcinas produced the performances of their lives to snatch victory in a deciding leg.

The Spanish opened with a statement of intent, as Rodriguez took out 104 for the first leg despite England hitting three 140s to begin the game.

Wade hit a 180 and Taylor landed tops as England level, before Wade pinned the same bed for a 2-1 lead.

Although Spain won the fourth, double five from Wade edged England back ahead and Taylor then won the sixth with a neat 100 finish of single 20 and two double tops.

Misses in the next two, though, allowed Alcinas in to finish 83 on the bull before a 125 checkout from Rodriguez levelled.

Rodriguez then hit a 180 in the ninth, with two misses at double top from Wade allowing Alcinas in, as the newcomer from Mallorca took out double 18 to put Spain 5-4 up.

Taylor levelled on double top to force a deciding leg, which Spain took with a brilliant 11-dart finish, with the pair hitting 180s before Alcinas checked out 42 in two darts for a famous victory.

"This is the greatest moment of my career," said Alcinas, who will also play Wade in the Ladbrokes.com World Darts Championship later this month. "Both of us played really well and it's amazing to beat Phil and James."

Taylor said: "The Spanish lads took their chances well and hit some big shots at the right time. They punished me and James when we missed and deserved to win."

AUSTRALIA 6-5 REPUBLIC OF IRELAND
AUSTRALIAN aces Simon Whitlock and Paul Nicholson stared defeat in the fact before overcoming Ireland in a deciding leg to reach the group stage of the Cash Converters World Cup of Darts.

Irish duo Mick McGowan and William O'Connor had seen off Slovakia in the first round, but looked set to fall to a heavy loss when Australia took a 4-1 lead in this contest.

Whitlock had opened the game with double eight and repeated the feat as the Aussies took four of the first five legs.

However, the World Championship finalist missed two darts for a 5-1 lead as Ireland won two in a row to pull back to 4-3.

Although Australia moved a leg away from victory, Ireland stepped in to take the ninth and punished five missed match darts for O'Connor to force a deciding leg on double ten.

However, Australia were first to the double, with Nicholson posting double 16 for the win and a last eight berth.
