David Munyua will return to the Paddy Power World Darts Championship after winning the African Dart Group Northern Africa Qualifier, denying Evans Njuguna in a dramatic last-leg decider on Sunday.
Munyua made history in becoming the first Kenyan to appear and win on the Alexandra Palace stage last year, and he sealed his return to the biggest event in darts with victory in the Northern African Qualifier held in Nairobi.
The 30-year-old stormed to two whitewash wins in his opening matches, before defeating Uganda’s Acidri Isaac Passi 5-1 to reach the quarter-finals.
Munyua then saw off Okalany Robert Clegg with another sweeping performance in a 6-0 victory to set up a semi-final clash with compatriot Peter Wanjii.
There, the World Championship star came back from 5-3 down against Wanjii, winning four legs on the trot to triumph 7-5 and go one game away from glory.
Njuguna awaited Munyua in the showpiece and the two traded blows in a thrilling final, with Njuguna leading 7-6 and spurning a match dart on an 81 finish.
Munyua held his nerve to take the match to a deciding-leg, where he left 56 after 12 darts thrown - and, despite missing seven match darts, claimed victory on double ten to seal a historic return to the World Championship.
The Kenyan star famously defeated former World Grand Prix champion Mike De Decker at last year’s World Championship in a trailblazing moment for African darts, and he will be hoping to make more history this December.
Njuguna came agonisingly close to an Alexandra Palace debut, missing a match dart at double ten in the final despite a marvellous run in Nairobi.
After back-to-back 4-1 wins to kick off his campaign, Njuguna saw off Darius Nyenyo 5-2 before taking the scalp of top seed Peter Waichuri in a last-leg shootout.
Despite a 7-3 victory over Festus Chepkwony in the semi-finals and a stellar showing in the final, it was not to be for Njuguna, whose maiden appearance at the World Championship will have to wait.
The Southern Africa Qualifier will be held on November 1, to see which other African representative will join Munyua at Alexandra Palace.
