Anderson Claims Qualifying Double

GARY ANDERSON completed a Speedy Hire UK Open double over Phil Taylor, claiming a 6-2 win when the pair met in the Qualifier Seven final at Wigan on Saturday.

Anderson had defeated Taylor to win Qualifier Five a fortnight ago, and repeated the feat with a fine display to take the £6,000 title, also avenging Thursday's 888.com Premier League Darts loss to the Stoke legend at the same time.

The Scot enjoyed a strong day, defeating fellow countryman John Henderson in the first round before overcoming Mark Hylton, Ronnie Baxter and Arron Monk to reach the quarter-finals.

He then took out World Champion Adrian Lewis in a deciding leg in the last eight, and saw off Mervyn King 6-3 to reach the final, where an electric start saw him move 4-0 up against Taylor.

Anderson opened the match with a 98 finish before breaking throw twice with 13-dart legs and posting the bull for a 126 checkout in taking command.

Taylor got off the mark in the fifth with an 11-dart leg, and after Anderson missed the bull for a 130 checkout in the next he landed tops to cut the gap to 4-2.

Both players also missed the bull for 121 finishes in leg seven, with Anderson mopping up on double eight for a 14-dart leg to move a leg away from the win.

Taylor opened the eighth with a maximum and was resting on double top after 12 darts, but missed seven darts to take the leg as Anderson hit back and posted double ten for the win.

Taylor, who had bounced back to win Qualifier Six in Barnsley two weeks ago, began his day by whitewashing Jimmy Mann, and also defeated Justin Pipe, Magnus Caris, Matt Padgett, Andy Hamilton and Wayne Jones on his way to the final.

King's run to the semis saw him reach the last four for the fourth time this year, and featured a high-quality win over in-form Wes Newton in the last 16.

Jones' wins over Matt Jackson, Dennis Priestley, Michael van Gerwen, Alan Tabern and Vincent van der Voort saw him reach his first semi-final of the year, while Gary Welding knocked out James Wade and Robert Thornton on his way to the quarters.

PDC Unicorn Under-21 World Champion Arron Monk was amongst the last 16 losers, alongside Mark Webster, who missed double 12 for a 141 finish in the deciding leg of his clash with van der Voort.

Webster had also watched Dave Chisnall hit his second nine-dart finish of the year in their first round encounter, with the St Helens thrower earning an £800 bonus but going on to lose the game 6-4.

The final Speedy Hire UK Open Qualifier will be held on Sunday in Wigan, after which the leading 96 players (plus ties) in the UK Open Order of Merit qualify to compete in the televised finals at Bolton from June 2-5.
