World Grand Prix Qualifying Race Continues

THE Derby Players Championships saw the race for qualifying places in the World Grand Prix next month continue.

The World Grand Prix will feature top top 16 players in the PDC Order of Merit following the Players Championships in Nuland on September 24 & 25, as well as 16 other qualifiers.

The top 14 non-qualified players from the Players Championship Order of Merit will be joined by the top two players from Ireland/Northern Ireland in the tournament at the Citywest Hotel in Dublin.

The two Players Championships held in Derby saw no changes to the provisional 32-player field for the World Grand Prix - leaving several hopefuls needing to have a big weekend in Nuland to win their spot.

Vincent van der Voort remains in 17th place in the main Order of Merit, sitting £5,200 behind Ronnie Baxter and £5,700 adrift of Colin Lloyd - although the Dutchman would be one of the Players Championship qualifiers following his PDC ProTour performances this year.

However, the race for Players Championship qualifying places sees Co Stompe now £400 clear of Steve Beaton and Colin Osborne following the Derby events.

Scott Rand is £1,200 behind the Dutchman, while Sweden's Magnus Caris is £2,600 away from Stompe - meaning that he would need to reach a final in Nuland in his bid for a Dublin spot.

Cappamore's William O'Connor and Belcoo's Brendan Dolan remain in the two qualifying places for players from Ireland/Northern Ireland, although left-hander Michael Mansell is £400 adrift of the latter.

The final two Players Championships will be held in Nuland, Holland on September 24 and 25, after which the 32-player field will be confirmed.

Further Players Championships will be held in Dublin, Killarney, Gladbeck, Benidorm, Crawley and Wigan during the autumn as players battle for places in December's Players Championship Finals and the Ladbrokes.com World Darts Championship.
