Speedy Services UK Open Round Four

WORLD CHAMPION Adrian Lewis was knocked out of the Speedy Services UK Open on Saturday afternoon by Wes Newton, but former winners Phil Taylor and Raymond van Barneveld continued their challenge to regain the trophy in Bolton.

Lewis had powered past Kevin McDine on Friday night, but suffered a fourth round loss as Newton came from 6-5 down to take a 9-7 win from their clash.

Newton, the runner-up last year, now meets Belgian debutant Kim Huybrechts in Saturday night's last 16, and said: "I've played Adrian a few times and they're always good games, and this was no different.

"I produced a couple of good legs at the business end of the match and that proved the difference. Getting to the final last year gave me a lot of self-belief and hopefully I can have a good run again this weekend."

Huybrechts won through to the fifth round in his first UK Open appearance with a 9-7 win over Vincent van der Voort, sealing victory with a 111 checkout.

Two other Dutchmen, though, won through to the last 16, with Raymond van Barneveld seeing off Andy Hamilton 9-5 despite the World Championship finalist hitting a 170 finish, while Michael van Gerwen also landed a maximum checkout as he hit back from 3-0 down to defeat Mervyn King 9-7.

Van Gerwen will now play Terry Jenkins, who was a 9-3 winner against Dean Winstanley, while van Barneveld - the 2006 and 2007 champion - takes on Peter Wright, who hit back from 3-1 down to see off Richie Burnett 9-4.

Four-time UK Open champion Phil Taylor, meanwhile, brushed aside Colin Osborne 9-1 in their repeat of the 2009 final.

Taylor had struggled to see off Roland Scholten on Friday night, but won the opening eight legs against Osborne before the Derby thrower put aside his double trouble to win the ninth, but it was not enough to save him from the round's heaviest defeat.

"I was a lot more comfortable on stage today but the scoreline probably didn't reflect the game," said Taylor. "Colin missed a few doubles and his head dropped a bit, but it's a good feeling for me to be in the last 16.

"We're getting down to the serious stuff now and it's a great format which keeps you on edge - it's like the FA Cup and it's a great event."

Taylor now meets Ronnie Baxter, who was a 9-6 winner against Darren Webster on Saturday afternoon, while Australian star Simon Whitlock will take on Dave Chisnall.

Whitlock was in fine form as he defeated Justin Pipe 9-5, winning five of the game's final six legs after the opening eight were shared, while Chisnall defeated Dennis Smith by the same scoreline.

Gary Anderson, who had hit a nine-darter on Friday night, was unable to repeat the form as he lost the all-Scottish battle with Robert Thornton 9-7.

Thornton now plays Dennis Priestley after the two-time World Champion defeated Andy Smith 9-8 - after the Studley thrower hit back from 8-4 down to force a decider.

Denis Ovens, a semi-finalist for the past two years, takes on Paul Nicholson in the last 16 after their respective wins over Brendan Dolan and Arron Monk, while Jamie Caven and Joe Cullen also clash on Saturday evening.

Caven was a 9-7 comeback winner against Mark Hylton, while Cullen took a 9-8 win over Colin Lloyd in their game as the Essex man failed to follow up his win over reigning champion James Wade on Friday night with another success.

The fifth round will be played on Saturday evening, with the quarter-finals, semi-finals and final of the £200,000 event following on Sunday.

First Set of Matches
Kim Huybrechts enjoyed a 9-7 win over Vincent van der Voort on his main stage debut at the Speedy Services UK Open, sealing victory against the Dutchman with a 111 checkout to accompany four earlier 180s.
Joe Cullen edged past Colin Lloyd on Board Two, sneaking to a 9-8 win as the Essex ace failed to follow up Friday's defeat of reigning champion with another victory. Cullen was never behind, and although he missed darts for a 9-7 win as Lloyd forced a decider, the Bradford youngster took the 17th leg to progress.
Simon Whitlock defeated Justin Pipe on Board Three to book his last 16 spot with a 9-5 triumph. Pipe hit back from 2-0 down to level at four-all, but the Australian took five of the next six legs - including back-to-back 13-darters - to progress.
Dave Chisnall moved into the last 16 for the second successive year with a 9-5 win over Dennis Smith. Chisnall took an early 3-0 lead and also led 5-1, and although Smith won four legs out of five to hit back to 6-5 it was the St Helens man who won three in a row for victory.

Second Set of Matches
Raymond van Barneveld sealed a hat-trick of UK Open wins over Andy Hamilton with a 9-5 defeat of the World Championship finalist. Van Barneveld took command of the game by moving into a 6-1 lead, hitting an 11-darter along the way, before Hamilton hit back with a 170 to pull to back 6-3. The Dutchman, though, held off the comeback before sealing victory with a 126 checkout and an average of over 102, as well as hitting 60 percent of his chances at a double.
Robert Thornton hit back from behind to win the all-Scottish battle with Gary Anderson 9-7. Anderson, who hit a nine-darter on Friday night, led 4-2 but saw Thornton seize command by winning four legs in a row in mid-game before hitting his fifth 180 in sealing the 9-7 win.
Peter Wright came from 3-1 down against Richie Burnett to secure his place in the last 16, winning eight of the game's next nine legs for a 9-4 triumph.
Denis Ovens also moved into the fifth round, coming from 4-0 and 5-1 down to defeat Brendan Dolan 9-8 in a tense clash. Ovens trailed throughout but punished Dolan for his missed match darts by edging through on double two in the deciding leg.

Third Set of Matches
Phil Taylor swept past Colin Osborne 9-1 in their repeat of the 2009 UK Open final as the four-time Bolton champion moved into the last 16. Taylor punished a string of missed doubles from Osborne to win the game's first eight legs, before the Derby ace landed double ten to take the ninth. However, Taylor sealed the win in the next as he booked a fifth round place.
Paul Nicholson averaged almost 100 in a high-quality win over Arron Monk. Nicholson led 3-0 and 4-2 before winning four successive legs to take command of the game, before sealing victory with a 13-darter.
Jamie Caven came from 4-2 down to defeat Mark Hylton on Board Three, with a run of four successive legs in mid-game turning the match in his favour. Hylton then hit back from 7-5 down to level, but Caven landed a 13-darter to regain the advantage and sealed the win when Hylton was unable to force a decider.
Ronnie Baxter joined them in the fifth round, defeating resurgent Darren Webster 9-6. Baxter led 3-1 before Webster levelled, but the Blackpool ace won four straight legs to lead 8-4 before sealing the win.

Fourth Set of Matches
Wes Newton - last year's beaten finalist - knocked out World Champion Adrian Lewis with a 9-7 win in a see-saw contest. Newton came from 2-1 down early on to lead 4-2 before Lewis took a 6-5 avantage. The Fleetwood ace, though, moved 7-6 up, and although Lewis levelled with a 12-darter, Newton replied with an 11-dart finish and sealed the victory on double top in the next.
Terry Jenkins won through to the last 16 with a comfortable 9-3 win over PDC newcomer Dean Winstanley. After sharing the game's first two legs, Jenkins won the next five to take control of the game before Winstanley hit back to trail 7-3. Jenkins, though, finished 102 to win his eighth leg and sealed the win with a 14-darter.
Dennis Priestley held off Andy Smith's fightback to edge through with a 9-8 victory in their game. Smith held an early lead before Priestley took three in a row to move 5-3 up, and he went on to take an 8-4 advantage before Smith hit back, landing an 11-darter amongst four successive legs to level. Priestley, though, was too strong in the decider and finished double 17 for the win.
Michael van Gerwen came from 3-0 down to win 9-7 against Mervyn King in the afternoon's final game. The young Dutchman hit back to halt King's brilliant start by winning five straight legs to move 5-3 up, and he also led 6-4 before powering in a 170 checkout to take a three-leg cushion. King pulled back to 8-7, but van Gerwen hit a 14-darter to seal the win.
