Newton: I Learned From Whitlock Loss

WES NEWTON admits that he 'learned a lot' from losing to Simon Whitlock in the PartyPoker.net European Championship final last September.

Newton reached his second major final when he won through to the European Championship decider in Muelheim, Germany in 2012.

However, Newton lost 11-5 to Whitlock in the final - but he is determined to show his progress since when the pair clash in Thursday's McCoy's Premier League Darts at the Capital FM Arena in Nottingham.

"I learned a lot from that experience," said Newton, who also lost out to James Wade in the 2011 UK Open final.

"I was playing in front of a big crowd, it was my second major final and Simon had a lot of support, and I've learned from that not to let it bother me so much.

"It would be nice to get a bit of revenge but that's gone now, it's history. Every week in this Premier League's important, it's massive to get points no matter who you play.

"It's going to be another big game and hopefully I'll get a win."

Newton has picked up three points over the past two weeks and claimed his first Premier League victory a week ago when he saw off Adrian Lewis in Exeter.

The Fleetwood star admits that he is now feeling more comfortable in front of the huge crowds on the Premier League stage as he settles in to his debut season.

"I'm learning all the time," he adds. "Playing in the Premier League helps massively, because the crowds are massive and the atmosphere is electric, so the more I do this, the better player I'm going to be.

"It's a bit daunting thinking about it, but as a player I just want to be up there every week because it's absolutely awesome and the support the fans give you is unbelievable. To be up there playing in front of that crowd is amazing."
