German Darts Masters Day Two

ADRIAN LEWIS, Michael van Gerwen and Raymond van Barneveld all suffered deciding-leg defeats in a dramatic second round at the German Darts Masters on Saturday.

The three top names were joined in exiting the event by top-ten rivals Andy Hamilton and Justin Pipe on a day of upsets and comebacks at the Glaspalast in Sindelfingen.

Lewis, whose last three tournament victories have come in Germany, saw his hopes of repeating last September's German Darts Masters triumph at the venue ended as he was edged out by Kevin Painter.

Lewis hit five 180s in the game, including one in the decider only to see Painter match his maximum before punishing a pair of misses from the world number three - at double top and ten - to step in and land tops for an 11-darter in sealing the win.

Van Gerwen, the number one seed and a two-time European Tour winner this year, was edged out in another dramatic decider by Wayne Jones, the resurgent Wolverhampton ace who punished three misses for the match from the Dutchman in the final leg by overcoming his own earlier misses by hitting double 16.

Five-time World Champion Raymond van Barneveld hit a finish of 160 during his game with Stuart Kellett, the UK Masters finalist who came back from 2-0 down to claim victory in a memorable deciding leg.

Van Barneveld was first to a double as he left 146, but the Dutch star missed double 16 to complete the combination, and Northwich's Kellett took out 88 on the bull for a famous triumph.

"It's the first time I've ever played Raymond, so to beat him is unbelievable," admitted Kellett. "I was probably a bit nervous at the start of the game but I'm so glad that the bullseye went in at the end!

"I hope I can keep it going now and I believe I can go all the way, but I've got to do it now."

World number six Hamilton, meanwhile, was whitewashed by Gary Anderson as the clinical Scot set up a third round clash with Jones courtesy of his triumph.

Pipe was the other member of the world's top ten to exit on Saturday, although he lost to in-form world number seven Dave Chisnall, whose 6-3 triumph means he now faces Painter in the last 16.

World number four Simon Whitlock had fewer problems as he swept aside World Youth Champion Michael Smith 6-2, despite the youngster opening the game with a 145 checkout.

James Wade also continued his return to action in winning fashion as he defeated Paul Nicholson 6-4, and he now meets world number eight Wes Newton in the third round.

Newton, who won the European Darts Open in Sindelfingen at Easter, was a 6-5 winner against Austria's Maik Langendorf earlier on Saturday as he sneaked through a see-saw contest.

Dutch qualifiers Vincent van der Voort and Mareno Michels will also meet in the last 16 following their impressive wins on Saturday,

Van der Voort came from 3-1 down to win 6-3 against Colin Lloyd, who took out 124 and 120 early in their contest only to pay for eight missed doubles in the sixth leg, while Michels was a 6-4 winner against Kim Huybrechts after trailing the Belgian 4-2.

Robert Thornton and Brendan Dolan were impressive winners as they set up a third round clash, with the Scot whitewashing Richie Burnett and the Northern Irish ace seeing off Ian White 6-2.

Steve Beaton was another impressive performer as he followed up his first round whitewash of Mick Todd by dropping only one leg in a heavy win over Paul Amos, and the former World Champion now plays Jamie Caven on Sunday afternoon.

Caven edged out Terry Jenkins to earn his spot in the last 16, coming from 5-4 down to force a deciding leg, which he won in 14 darts.

Peter Wright and Mervyn King will meet in the other third round game after they produced strong displays to defeat Jamie Robinson and Ronnie Baxter respectively.

Sunday's third round will be followed by the culmination of the £100,000 event on in the evening session, which features the quarter-finals, semi-finals and final.

The tournament is also the last before the cut-off for places in next month's partypoker.com World Grand Prix, with van der Voort, Jones and Michels all still able to force their way into a qualifying place should they continue their progression on Sunday.

Peter Wright, the runner-up in the German Darts Championship a fortnight ago, produced a superb display to win through to Sunday's third round, hitting six 180s and averaging almost 100 as he defeated Jamie Robinson 6-2. Wright hit a 180 and double 18 to win the opening leg, and landed another maximum in the second before Robinson capitalised on a missed double to land double ten and get off the mark. Both players hit 180s in the third as Wright edged back ahead with a 13-darter on double ten, only for Robinson to brilliantly finish 157 in leg four to level. However, the Colchester ace was punished for missing tops to break throw in leg five as Wright returned on double eight, before the world number 17 then broke himself to move 4-2 up. Wright added another 180 and double three to move three legs clear, before piling in another maximum and two 140s in an 11-darter which sealed a fine win.

Mervyn King staged a superb comeback from 3-1 down to win five successive legs in sealing a 6-3 victory over Ronnie Baxter as he reached the German Darts Masters third round. After King started strongly by winning the opening leg in 14 darts, despite a 180 from his opponent, Baxter took the next three, levelling by adding another maximum in a 13-darter, breaking throw on double eight following two misses from the Norfolk ace and then taking out 121 for a 12-darter. Baxter also added another 180 in the fifth leg, but King posted double 16 to hit back and then broke to level by hitting the same bed, before hitting a maximum and double four to move 4-3 up. King added another 180 as he posted a superb 12-darter by finishing 136 to move 5-3 up, before sealing the win on double 16 with a 14-darter.

Mareno Michels reached the last 16 of a European Tour event for the first time, and that stage for only the third time in a PDC ranking event, as he came from behind to knock out Kim Huybrechts 6-4 at the German Darts Masters. Huybrechts took out 67 to win the opening leg, but Michels levelled on double eight and then broke with a sensational 167 checkout for a 12-darter in leg three. Huybrechts broke back to level by finish 72, took out double ten to regain the lead and broke once again with a 12-darter which featured a 180 as he moved 4-2 up. Michels, though, edged a key seventh on double eight, finished 78 to level and landed a 180 before taking out 96 to regain the lead. The pair traded 180s as Huybrechts sought to force a decider, but the Dutch ace held his nerve to finish double eight for victory.

Ruthless Robert Thornton whitewashed Richie Burnett to win through to the third round of the German Darts Masters. Thornton held throw in the opening leg on double four and hit the same bed to double his lead with a break of throw, before taking out a fine 108 checkout with 'Shanghai' on the 18 bed as he moved 3-0 up. The Scot then finished tops with his third dart to break throw again, landed double four for a five-leg lead and punished two missed doubles from Burnett by finishing 65 on tops to complete a comprehensive victory.

Steve Beaton raced past Paul Amos by claiming six straight legs to win through to the third round of a fourth successive European Tour event. Beaton actually opened the game with a 180, but Amos held throw in the opening leg by taking out 81 on the bullseye, before the former World Champion levelled on double 16, broke on double 12 and added double eight for a 3-1 lead. Beaton added two 140s in a 14-darter as double four moved him three legs clear, before double nine helped him move into a 5-1 cushion. Amos fought back with two 140s in the seventh leg, but Beaton added a second maximum of his own before sealing the win on double ten.

Wes Newton continued his bid to win a second successive European Tour title at the Glaspalast in Sindelfingen with a narrow 6-5 victory over Austrian Maik Langendorf in a see-saw round two clash. The pair traded 180s in the opening leg as the Austrian World Cup ace held throw on double eight, before Newton added another maximum in the second leg as le levelled in 14 darts, before hitting another 14-dart finish to break. Three missed doubles from Newton in the fourth allowed Langendorf to break back on double 16 before the Austrian hit a 180 in the fifth, only for Newton to hit double eight to regain the lead. Newton then moved 4-2 up with a 13-darter which he finished on tops, only for Langendorf to hit the same bed to take the seventh. Langendorf then levelled with a 13-dart leg and finished a 14-darter with a 72 checkout, adding his fourth maximum of the game in the process as he took a 5-4 lead. Newton, though, finished 114 to force a deciding leg, with the Austrian opening with another 180 only for Newton to score 120 and 180 as he was first to a double - initially missing double 12 for a 101 finish, one dart at double six and two at double three, but Langendorf was unable to give himself a dart at a double when needing 78, and the Fleetwood ace return to land double one for victory.

Brendan Dolan ended Ian White's hopes of claiming a second successive ranking title, taking a 6-2 win from their second round clash at the German Darts Masters. Dolan made an immediate statement by hitting a 180 and a 66 finish in the opening leg, before punishing White for missing the bull for a 130 finish by hitting double eight in leg two. Dolan landed a 180 and double 16 as he moved 3-0 up with 14-darter, before White replied in kind with a maximum in a 14-dart leg. The Stoke ace then opened the fifth leg with two 180s, and though he was unable to complete a nine-darter, he landed double four to reduce the gap to 3-2. Dolan edged back ahead on double eight before finishing double four to lead 5-2, and he then sealed victory by checking out 105 on double 16.

Dave Chisnall's challenge to win a second successive European Tour event continued with a fine 6-3 win over Justin Pipe in Saturday afternoon's final game. Chisnall took out 80 to win the opening leg, before Pipe levelled by posting double 16. The new world number seven hit a 180 and tops for a 12-darter in the third leg, before breaking in leg four following missed doubles from Pipe, hitting double ten and then taking out 146 for a 4-1 lead. Pipe replied with a 120 checkout before Chisnall edged one leg from the won on double six. Double 16 from Pipe saw him hit back, but Chisnall landed a 180 and finished 81 on tops for a 12-darter as he sealed his last 16 spot.

James Wade overcame Paul Nicholson 6-4 to set up a clash with Wes Newton in Sunday's third round of the German Darts Masters. Nicholson, the runner-up in the European Darts Open at the Glaspalast earlier this year, took the first leg with a 13-darter and hit a 180 in the second, only for Wade to level with a 105 finish. Wade missed tops to break in the third as Nicholson returned on double eight, before the world number five hit a 180 and double ten to level in the fourth, although his opponent missed two darts to break. Nicholson hit a 180 and double eight to hold in the fifth, with Wade levelled in 13 darts before securing the first break in leg seven to lead 4-3, landing double ten to move in front. Wade, though, missed seven darts - admittedly with six being on the double ten wire - to win a fifth leg as Nicholson broke back on double ten, but the left-hander produced a timely 174 score and posted double two to edge 5-4 up before once again punishing missed doubles from Nicholson by pinning double two to complete the victory.

Simon Whitlock produced a clinical performance to see off Michael Smith 6-2 and sweep into the German Darts Masters third round. Smith actually broke in the opening leg, taking out a brilliant 145 finish, before Whitlock fired in a 180 and an 87 finish to level before finishing double eight for a 13-darter to move 2-1 up and double ten to break again in leg four, after Smith hit a 180 but missed five darts at doubles. Whitlock then landed double 18 for a 13-darter to win a fourth straight leg, before Smith hit back by finishing 65 on tops. Whitlock, though, finished 81 on double 18 to lead 5-2 before posting double eight to seal an impressive win.

Gary Anderson soared into the last 16 of the German Darts Masters with a clinical whitewash of Andy Hamilton. The Scot punished a missed bullseye from Hamilton to win the opening leg on double five, and followed a 180 by hitting the same bed to take leg two. He then finished double four to take leg three, breaking throw in 14 darts before finishing 101 on double 18 to lead 4-0. He then took out 96 on double eight to move five legs up, and traded 180s with Hamilton in the sixth before sealing victory in 13 darts on double eight.

UK Masters finalist Stuart Kellett edged out Raymond van Barneveld 6-5 in an 11-leg thriller. Van Barneveld made the better start, landing a 180 and double ten to take the opening leg in 12 darts before doubling his lead with a maximum and double 16. Kellett landed a 180 of his own as he got off the mark in leg three, before he levelled with an 80 finish. Van Barneveld then took out 160 to break, and though Kellett levelled on double four, the Dutch ace took a 4-3 cushion with double 16. Kellett posted a 180 and double four as he squared the game at four-all, before double 12 put the Cheshire ace a leg away from victory. Van Barneveld posted a 180 and finished 60 for a 14-darter to send the game into a decider, but the five-time World Champion paid for missing double 16 for a 146 game shot as Kellett returned to take out 88 on the bull for victory.

Wayne Jones ended Michael van Gerwen's hopes of winning a third European Tour title of the year with a narrow 6-5 triumph over the world number two. Jones had the better of the early exchanges, sharing the opening two legs - winning the first on double four before van Gerwen hit a 171 to set up a 100 checkout as he levelled - before finishing 86 and 130 to move into a 3-1 lead. Van Gerwen hit back by taking out 106 and then levelled on double eight, but Jones edged leg seven as he followed a 180 with double eight to lead 4-3 - and that was soon extended to 5-3 when the Dutch ace missed tops to allow his opponent in on the same bed. Jones then hit a 180 in leg nine, but missed double 18 for the win and three further darts at double nine, as van Gerwen hit double ten to stay in the game. The pair traded 180s in the tenth, with Jones waiting on 40 as van Gerwen finished 85 on the bullseye to force a deciding leg, in which the number one seed was first to a finish, missing a dart at tops. Jones then missed double 16 with two darts to finish 86, but misses at double ten and five from the Dutchman allowed him back to finish double 16 for the win.

Vincent van der Voort set up an all-Dutch last 16 clash with Mareno Michels at the German Darts Trophy with a 6-3 comeback win over Colin Lloyd. Lloyd stormed out of the blocks, hitting two 180s in a 12-darter to win the opening leg before taking out 124 on the bull for a 2-0 lead. He also landed a 177 in the third, but van der Voort replied with a 180 and finished 64 to get off the mark, only for Lloyd to move 3-1 up with a 120 finish. Van der Voort hit back with a 13-darter in leg five before edging a game-changing sixth when Lloyd, averaging over 108 as he was first to a double after landing another 180, missed eight darts at a double to win the leg, allowing the Dutchman in to take out 64. Van der Voort then produced a superb 11-darter to move 4-3 up and hit doule eight for a 5-3 lead, before punishing a miss at tops from Lloyd to seal victory on double two.

Kevin Painter edged out world number three Adrian Lewis 6-5 in another dramatic 11-leg clash. A tight contest began with Lewis taking the first leg on double 16, after Painter missed two darts at double four, before the roles were reversed in the second as the European Champion hit a 180 but missed five darts at doubles to allow his opponent in to level on double ten. Lewis then hit a 14-darter before Painter levelled with a 64 finish, and double ten put the Stoke ace 3-2 up. Painter again punished misses from Lewis as he levelled on double 12 in leg six, despite another maximum from the two-time World Champion, and the Rugby-based star then took out tops for the first break as he moved 4-3 up. However, he missed three darts at tops to move clear in leg eight as Lewis scrambled home double one before hitting a 180 and a 73 finish for a 14-darter to regain the lead at 5-4. Painter finished double one to force a deciding leg, with both players hitting 180s in a brilliant leg - Lewis setting up 50 after nine darts and Painter on 47 after three visits to the oche. Lewis, though, missed two match darts at double top and ten, and Painter stepped in to finish 47 on tops for an 11-darter to grab his third round spot.

Jamie Caven completed the third round line-up with another dramatic 6-5 victory, as he edged out Terry Jenkins. Caven took advantage of misses from Jenkins to win the opener on doble 16 before finishing 124 to double his lead, only for Jenkins to hit legs of 14 and 13 darts to level. Caven moved back in front with a 14-darter, and defied a 180 from Jenkins to finish double top to lead 4-2, but Jenkins again dug in to hit back with a 13-darter, a 180 in levelling and another 180 and a 106 finish to move 5-4 up. Caven took the tenth leg to force a decider, with Jenkins hitting a 180 but unable to finish 100 to allow the Derby ace in to take out 66 for a 14-darter as he progressed to the last 16.
