German Darts Masters Third Round

PAINTER'S MASTERPIECE SEES HIM REACH GERMAN DARTS MASTERS QUARTER-FINALS

KEVIN PAINTER ended Dave Chisnall's bid to win a second successive European Tour event with a superb 6-1 victory in their third round clash at the German Darts Masters on Sunday, and he was joined in the quarter-finals by Simon Whitlock and James Wade.

Painter needed little over 13 minutes to see off Chisnall, who matched his opponent's 101 average but paid the price for missed doubles.

Painter kicked off the game with a 180 and led 2-0 before Chisnall got off the mark, but the world number seven missed his chance to level as the former Players Championship Finals winner took the next four legs in a row, including an 11-darter, to progress.

Painter now meets world number four Whitlock in the quarter-finals as the £100,000 heads to it's conclusion on Sunday evening, with the Australian having edged out Stuart Kellett 6-5 in their last 16 contest.

Kellett, who knocked out Raymond van Barneveld in a decider on Saturday night, hit finishes of 151 and 108 as he took Whitlock all the way, but the Australian was too strong in the final leg.

Whitlock is now the only player in the last eight who has previously won a European Tour event, following his success in the Dutch Darts Masters last October.

Wes Newton, who was a winner in Sindelfingen at Easter, saw his bid to win another title at the Glaspalast ended by a clinical James Wade display as the world number five took a 6-3 triumph.

Wade now faces Mervyn King in the quarter-finals, after the Norfolk ace edged past Peter Wright with a 14-darter in the deciding leg of their contest.

Steve Beaton powered through to the last eight for a fourth successive European Tour event with a sublime 6-1 win over Jamie Caven, hitting checkouts of 135 and 100 in the 13-minute victory.

Beaton will now meet Brendan Dolan on Sunday evening, after the Northern Irish ace defeated Robert Thornton 6-3 to progress to the last eight.

Wolverhampton's Wayne Jones continued his resurgence with a superb 6-4 win against Gary Anderson, backing up Saturday's second round win over number one seed Michael van Gerwen in brilliant fashion as the pair hit six ton-plus checkouts.

Jones finished 120 and 106 to take the opening two legs, while Anderson took out 161 as he moved 3-2 up - only for the former European Championship finalist to match that finish and take out 139 to swing the game back in his favour at 5-3.

Anderson pinned 124 to stay in the game, but Jones claimed leg ten for a last eight spot against youngster Mareno Michels, who won the all-Dutch clash with Vincent van der Voort 6-1 to reach his first PDC ranking quarter-final.

Alongside the £20,000 winner's cheque for the German Darts Masters, Sunday evening's final stages will also see the final qualifying places for next month's partypoker.com World Grand Prix decided.

Jones only needs to overcome Michels and reach the semi-finals to edge out Jamie Lewis for a qualifying place, while the Dutch youngster would earn a Dublin spot should he win the tournament, and Wade still has the opportunity to reclaim fourth place in the world rankings at the expense of Whitlock.

The draw for the partypoker.com World Grand Prix will be made on Sunday evening, with the Sky Sports-televised event to take place from October 7-13 at the Citywest Hotel. For tickets, visit pdc.seetickets.com.

Wayne Jones won through to the German Darts Masters quarter-finals with a 6-4 win over Gary Anderson in a high-quality game, which featured six ton-plus checkouts between the players. Jones took the opening two legs with finishes of 120 and 106 before Anderson finished double five and tops to level. The Scot then took out 161 to lead 3-2, only to miss three darts at double 18 in the next leg as Jones took out 81 to level. Jones then defied a 180 from Anderson by finishing 161 himself, and moved 5-3 up with a fine 139 combination. Anderson hit a 180 and took out 124 for a 12-darter to pull back to 5-4, but missed his chance to force a decider in the next as Jones scrambled home double seven to reach the last eight - keeping alive his hopes of snatching World Grand Prix qualification in the process.

Mareno Michels won through to his first PDC ranking quarter-final with a 6-1 win over Vincent van der Voort in their all-Dutch third round contest. Michels made a confident start with a 180 in the opening leg, which he won on double ten, before van der Voort levelled with a 14-darter as he landed tops. Michels hit a 170 score in the third as he set up double eight, before hitting the same bed to to finish 44 in the next two legs as he moved 4-1 up. The youngster then broke throw once again by finishing 121 on the bull, and hit tops to win a fifth successive leg in sealing the win.

James Wade won through to the German Darts Masters quarter-finals with a 6-3 win over Wes Newton, ending the Fleetwood ace's hopes of a second successive Sindelfingen win. Wade landed a 180 and double ten in a 13-dart leg to open the game before a superb second leg saw Newton hit two 180s and Wade land another maximum, only to miss double top for a 120 finish as the world number eight hit double ten for a 12-darter to level. Newton then punished two misses from the left-hander to win the third and lead 2-1, but Wade finished 96 to hit back and then broke on double ten for a 3-2 advantage, with Newton missing three darts at doubles. Wade then pinned tops for a 64 finish to move two legs clear, with Newton landing a 13-darter to reply, hitting a 171 to leave double 12. Newton also landed a 180 in th eight leg, but Wade finished 116 on tops to deny him the chance to level, before the world number five hit a 180 and finished 76 to complete a fine display.

Mervyn King edged into the German Darts Masters quarter-finals with a narrow win over Peter Wright. Wright had the better of the early stages, finishing 112, double nine and double 16 to win three of the opening four legs, with King landing two 180s as he got off the mark on double nine in the third. King finished 80 in the fifth to pull back to 3-2, before Wright hit a 180 as he broke back to regain a two-leg lead. King missed double 16 to complete a showpiece 132 checkout in the seventh, hitting two bullseyes, but returned to land double eight, and then took out 61 on double 18 to level at four-all. However, King was punished for a miss at tops in the ninth as Wright landed double ten to move 5-4 up, but he missed three match darts at double 12 in the next as King hit double 16 to force a decider, which he won in 14 darts on double 12.

Simon Whitlock sneaked past Stuart Kellett in a deciding leg to reach the German Darts Masters quarter-finals. Kellett, who knocked out Raymond van Barneveld on Saturday evening, opened the game with a fine 151 finish and took out double two to move 2-0 up, punishing three misses at Whitlock on the double top wire. Whitlock finished 80 on double ten to get off the mark in leg three, and hit a 180 and a 90 finish to level in the fourth. Kellett landed a 180 in the fifth, but was punished for missed doubles as Whitlock posted double ten to move ahead and double 18 for a 13-darter to take a 4-2 advantage. The world number four was punished for one miss at tops in the seven, to complete a 116 finish, as Kellett took out double six for a 14-darter, and the UK Masters finalist then hit a 180 and finished 96 for a 12-dart leg as he levelled the game. Kellett added another maximum in the ninth only for Whitlock to hit tops to lead 5-4, but a 108 finish from the Cheshire ace sent the game into a decider. Having taken out 88 to win his decider with van Barneveld on Saturday, Kellett this time was unable to give himself a dart at a double when needing 82, and Whitlock capitalised by taking out 60 on tops to take the win.

Kevin Painter produced a classy performance to sweep aside German Darts Championship winner Dave Chisnall 6-1 and set up a quarter-final with Simon Whitlock in Sindelfingen. Painter opened the game with a 180 and took the opening leg with a 12-darter to break throw immediately, and traded maximums with Chisnall as he took the second on double eight, after his opponent missed the bull for a 170 finish. Chisnall opened the third with a 180, and took out double nine for a 14-darter to get off the mark, but paid for a miss at tops in the fourth as Painter landed double six for a 3-1 cushion. The pair again traded 180s in leg five as Painter took out 76 for an 11-darter, and he landed a 171 score in the next to leave 24, stepping in to finish double six after Chisnall was unable to finish double 13 to take out 81. Chisnall then missed double 16 to stay in the game in the seventh leg, as Painter hit double ten to complete a fine win, with both players ending the game with averages above 101.

Steve Beaton needed less than 13 minutes to book his place in a fourth successive European Tour quarter-final, as he saw off Jamie Caven 6-1. Beaton took out 99 to break throw in the opening leg, before two missed doubles allowed Caven to level by finishing 74 on double ten. Beaton regained the lead by taking out 135 on the bull, and when Caven failed to capitalise on a 171 score in the fourth, the former World Champion punished his missed doubles by posting double two to move 3-1 up. Beaton then hit a 180 and finished 100 to move three legs clear, won a fifth leg on double eight and hit the same bed to seal a comprehensive win.

Brendan Dolan completed the German Darts Masters quarter-final line-up with a 6-3 victory over Robert Thornton. Dolan took the game's first three legs to take command, punishing four missed doubles from Thornton in leg two, before the Scot hit a 180 in getting off the mark in leg four. Dolan took out 81 to lead 4-1 and hit a 180 in the sixth leg, but Thornton finished 106 to hit back, only for the former World Grand Prix finalist to pin a 13-darter in moving a leg away from victory. Thornton took out 87 for a 14-darter to keep his hopes alive, but Dolan posted his second 180 in another 13-darter as he sealed victory on tops.
