Seventh Heaven For Burnett

RICHIE BURNETT claimed a remarkable victory in Group Seven of Championship League Darts on Tuesday, edging to a 6-5 win over Gary Anderson in the final of the internet-streamed event.

The Welsh ace was amongst a trio of former World Champions who came into the tournament for the seventh of eight groups, and showed his class by topping the league table following the round-robin stage.

He won five of his seven league games, with a brilliant 6-0 whitewash of Paul Nicholson in the final round seeing him knock his opponent out of the top four places as well as seal top spot above Steve Beaton.

Burnett then enjoyed a 6-3 semi-final win over Kim Huybrechts as he won through to the final, where he edged out Anderson in a see-saw thriller.

Burnett took the final's first two legs to lead, before Anderson finished 78 to reply - only for a 116 finish to put the Welsh ace 3-1 up.

Anderson then finished double nine and 68 to level, but missed tops in the seventh as Burnett hit the same bed to move back in front, before taking out 61 on double eight to move to the brink of victory at 5-3.

Anderson took out double 18 to pull back to 5-4, and when Burnett missed two match darts at double 19 in the next, the Scot hit double eight to send the game into a deciding leg.

Anderson opened with scores of 140 and 180 and was first to a finish, but missed five darts for the match at double 14 and seven, and Burnett pulled back to finish 106 on tops to snatch victory.

"I'm so happy to get through," said Burnett. "I was 3-1 up and then it was three-all, then I was 5-3 up and it went five-all and I really thought that I'd blown it.

"I had some darts before that to get through and Gary's a class act, and he must be gutted to lose at the end there because he had darts to win.

"I hung in there in the last leg; I was chucking myself through the air, snatching my darts and I'm just over the moon to get through.

"The final wasn't brilliant because I think we were both waiting for each other to hit the big scores, but it was at the end of a long day and I'm just glad to get through.

"Maybe I had a bit of luck in one game, where I should have lost against Kim Huybrechts and I won 6-5, and I just went from there. I got stronger as the day went on, and you build momentum, and by the time I beat Paul Nicholson 6-0, that was probably at the peak of my form and I played really well."

Beaton had ended the day level with Burnett with five victories, but lost out to Anderson 6-3 in their semi-final as the Scot moved into the decider.

Anderson was one of four players to finish the day with four wins, and was joined by Huybrechts in reaching the semi-finals, with Peter Wright and Paul Nicholson edged out on Leg Difference.

Three-time World Champion John Part and Jamie Caven, a double ranking event winner this year, were both eliminated though in Group Seven, winning one game apiece during a gruelling day.

Huybrechts, who entered the event in Group Three, will appear in his sixth group of the season on Wednesday in the last-chance Group Eight, while Wright and Anderson will both play for a fifth day as they bid to join Burnett in the Winners Group.

Beaton and Paul Nicholson will also return to Crondon Park GC in Essex to compete in Group Eight, alongside 2009 champion Colin Osborne, Andy Smith and Mark Walsh.

The day's champion will return on Thursday to compete in the big-money Winners Group, alongside Phil Taylor, Andy Hamilton, Wes Newton, Terry Jenkins, Michael van Gerwen, Ian White and Burnett.

Peter Wright came from 2-0 down to claim a 6-4 win over Kim Huybrechts in their Group Seven opener. Huybrechts finished 74 on the bull to win the opening leg, and hit a 180 in the second as he doubled his lead with a 14-darter. Wright, though, traded 180s with the Belgian as a 133 finish got him off the mark in leg three, before he finished 90 and 28 to move 3-2 up. Huybrechts finished 136 for a 12-darter to level at three-all, but Wright took out 61 and then landed tops for a 13-darter as he took a 5-3 cushion, and thought Huybrechts hit back in leg nine, he added a 180 in a 14-darter to complete the win with a 102.63 average.
John Part picked up a 6-3 win over Steve Beaton in the battle of the Group Seven newcomers. Part made a superb start to finish double eight, tops and double 16 to lead 3-0, and then took out 85 for a 14-darter and double 16 in moving five legs clear. Beaton hit a 180 and tops as he hit back, before taking out double 14 and double nine to stay in the game. Part, though, recovered from earlier missed match darts by pinning tops to seal the victory.
Richie Burnett held off Jamie Caven's fightback from 4-0 down before claiming a 6-4 victory in his Group Seven opener. Burnett capitalised on a miss at tops from Caven to take the opening leg, and then finished 81, 66 and double five to move 4-0 up. Caven finished double 16 to get off the mark, and though Burnett took the sixth leg to move 5-1 up, the Derby ace finished double 19, double five and 130 on the bull to pull back to 5-4. Burnett, though, was first to a finish in leg ten and landed double nine to take the points.
Paul Nicholson made a strong start to Group Seven, averaging 100 in a 6-2 win over Gary Anderson. Anderson hit tops to win the opener, but missed the same bed in leg two as Nicholson levelled on double six, before finishing 112 to move ahead. He also won the next two legs before Anderson finished 124 on double eight to reply, but Nicholson edged leg seven before hitting tops to seal the win.

Second Set of Matches
Steve Beaton bounced back to winning ways with a 6-3 win over Kim Huybrechts. Beaton finished 104 and tops to win the first leg, and though Huybrechts finished 74 to reply, the former World Champion took the next three to open up a 5-1 cushion. Huybrechts, aided by a 180 and tops, took the next two to hit back, but Beaton finished 74 on tops to take the points.
Peter Wright continued his winning start to Group Seven, defeating John Part 6-2. Wright finished double five and tops to win the tirst two, before sharing the next four with Part to lead 4-2. The Scot then finished 92 on double 16 for a 12-darter, before hitting a 180 and double 19 to complete a big win.

Nicholson landed double ten to win the opening leg, following misses from Caven, before a pair of 13-darters put him 3-0 up. Caven finished 83 to reply, and though Nicholson hit another 13-dart finish, that was bettered by an 11-darter from his opponent as he pulled back to 4-2. Nicholson, though, finished double eight to restore his cushion before taking out double 16 for a 14-darter to seal the victory.
Gary Anderson opened his account for Group Seven with a 6-2 defeat of Richie Burnett. Anderson opened the game with a 14-darter, with Burnett replying with a 180 in a 12-darter only to see his opponent pull clear, with the Scot hitting a 174 score and a 121 finish in the third leg, a 180 in a 12-darter to move 3-1 up, double five to win a third successive leg and 76 on tops - following five misses at double 12 from the Welsh ace - to lead 5-1. Double 16 saw Burnett reply, but Anderson completed the victory on double 12, ending the game with a 100 average.

Third Set of Matches
Gary Anderson claimed his second victory of the day, overcoming Steve Beaton 6-4. After Beaton won the opening leg, Anderson hit a 180 and finished 76 to level, punished missed doubles from his opponent to break and then hit a 13-darter for a 3-1 cushion. The next two were shared before Beaton finished 120 to pull back to 4-3, before Anderson hit a 180 and double ten to move 5-3 up. Beaton landed a maximum and a 90 finish to win his fourth leg, and added a 180 in the tenth, but Anderson finished 68 on double four to complete the win.
Richie Burnett came from 5-2 down to take a narrow 6-5 win over Kim Huybrechts, who remains without a win so far in Group Seven. Burnett punished missed doubles from Huybrechts to win two of the first three legs, with the Belgian having taken the second in 13 darts. Huybrechts then won four legs in a row to move 5-2 up, but was punished for missed doubles in the next two as Burnett finished 126 and took out double five to stay in the game, and then took out 106 to force a deciding leg, in which he hit a 180 and landed double eight to edge the win.

Double eight saw Part reply, but Nicholson sealed an impressive victory with double 18 for a 13-darter.
Peter Wright also continued his 100 percent start to Group Seven, edging out Jamie Caven 6-5. The pair hit 180s in the opening leg as a 14-darter put Wright ahead, with Caven taking out 70 to reply before hitting back once again after the Scot edged the third on double four by finishing double five and 97 to move 3-2 up. Wright finished 114 to break back in the sixth, before missed doubles allowed Caven to steal the seventh on double ten. The same double put him 5-3 up, but Wright finished legs of 14 and 11 darts to force a decider, before the Scot took out double 16 to take the points.

Fourth Set of Matches
Kim Huybrechts averaged 103 as he won his first game of Group Seven, overcoming Gary Anderson 6-4 in their clash. Anderson hit a 174 in a 14-darter as he levelled, before legs of 13 and 14 darts to the Belgian into a 5-3 lead. Anderson hit back on double ten for a 14-darter of his own, after Huybrechts missed double 14 for victory, but the Belgian ace opened leg ten with two 180s, and although he was unable to match last week's nine-darter, he returned to post double ten for the win.
Steve Beaton won the clash of former World Champions with Richie Burnett 6-3 to claim his second victory of the day. Beaton kicked off the game with legs of 13 and 14 darts, before finishing double four to move 3-0 up. Beaton, though, hit a 180 and tops to win the eighth leg and then sealed the win on double six.
Paul Nicholson edged to victory in the clash of the Group Seven unbeaten aces, sneaking past Peter Wright 6-5. The pair shared the opening two legs before Wright finished double top in the next two for a 3-1 cushion. Nicholson finished 68 and then landed a 180 and double two to level, before a third-dart double eight put him 4-3 up. Jamie Caven picked up his first win of the day, defeating fellow cellar-dweller John Part 6-4 to join the Canadian on two league points. Caven finished double top, double 16 and double eight to win the game's first three legs, before Part hit back with double ten and a third-dart double top. The next two were shared before Caven took out double four to move 5-3 up, and though Part finished double two to stay in the game, the Derby ace sealed the points on tops.

Fifth Set of Matches

Kim Huybrechts' revival continued with a second successive victory as he overcame Jamie Caven 6-4. Huybrechts landed 180s as he won the first three legs of the game, before Caven replied in the third. Caven, though, missed a dart at double 18 to move ahead in the ninth leg as Huybrechts returned on double seven to lead 5-4, before double five sealed his victory.
Richie Burnett's Play-Off push continued as he won his third game of the game, overcoming Peter Wright 6-3. Peter Wright got back to winning ways with a narrow 6-5 defeat of Gary Anderson. Wright took out double eight and 110 to win the opening two legs, with Anderson hitting back to level only for missed doubles to allow the world number 15 in to take the next three for a 5-2 cushion. Anderson finished double 14 to keep his hopes alive, and misses in the next two legs from Wright allowed him in to finish tops and double ten to force a decider, but Wright was first to a finish and took out 61 on double eight for the win.
Richie Burnett eliminated John Part from Group Seven with a 6-3 win in the battle of former World Champions. Burnett took the game's first three legs, before Part hit tops to take the fourth. The Canadian then missed the bull for a 122 finish in the fifth, as double 16 moved Burnett clear at 4-1. Part hit 180s as he took the next two legs as he pulled back to 4-3, but missed doubles in the next two legs allowed Burnett to seal the win.
Kim Huybrechts ensured survival in Group Seven with a 6-3 victory over Paul Nicholson - with the win also meaning that the Belgian can still qualify for the day's Play-Offs. After Huybrechts took the opener, Nicholson won the next three to put himself in command at 3-1. The Belgian won the next two to level, before taking out 105 to move 4-3 up, before punishing a miss at tops from Nicholson by hitting the same bed to lead 5-4, and Huybrechts then took out 88 on double 14 to seal the win.

Final Set of Matches
Kim Huybrechts ended the league phase with his fourth victory of the day, defeating John Part 6-1. Huybrechts capitalised on a Part miss at double 16 in the opening leg by hitting the same bed to lead, before finishing double 16 again in the second, taing out 104 on tops in the third and hitting a 180 to lead 4-0. Double ten put the Belgian 5-0 up, and though Part took out 125 to get off the mark, Huybrechts finished 112 to seal the win.
Steve Beaton sealed his semi-final place with a fifth win of the day, defeating Peter Wright 6-3. Beaton finished 106 to win the opening leg, before landing double 16 and tops to take the next two, and when Wright missed a host of chances to win leg four, the former World Champion took out double ten to move 4-0 up. Double 16 gave Weight two of the next three legs, and he also won the eighth to pull back to 5-3, but Beaton finished double eight to secure his Play-Off berth and leave Wright in fifth place going into the final games.
Richie Burnett's sensational 6-0 whitewash of Paul Nicholson, as he averaged 106.09, saw him jump to finish top of the league table and also knocked his opponent out of the top four in a stunning turnaround. Burnett took the opening leg on double four before hitting a 180 and double 16 to move two legs up with a 14-darter. Double ten gave him the third, before he hit a 180 in a 12-darter to lead 4-0 and sealed the win with back-to-back 13-dart legs.
Gary Anderson's 6-3 win over Jamie Caven saw him seal a Play-Off place and end Caven's involvement in the tournament. The first two legs were shared before Anderson finished double 18 to take the third and 124 for a 12-darter as he moved 3-1 up. Caven replied with a 147 finish, but Anderson added another 12-darter to and won the seventh in 14 darts to move 5-2 up. Caven finished 70 on double 16 to reply, but the Scot sealed his top four finish with a 13-dart leg.

Semi-Finals

Burnett made a superb start to the semi-final by winning the opening three legs before Huybrechts finished 112 to get off the mark. Burnett took the fifth before double eight pulled the Belgian back to 4-2. Tops moved Burnett to the brink of victory, and though his opponent replied with a 180 and double 16 in the eighth, a missed bull to complete a 123 combination in the next proved key as Burnett hit double eight to seal his place in the final on his first day in this year's event.
Gary Anderson won through to the Group Seven final, defeating Steve Beaton 6-3 in their semi-final. Anderson hit a 180 in the opening leg before breaking to lead 2-0, but Beaton finished 80 and 100 to level. The next two were shared, before double five put Anderson back in front at 4-3, and he then broke with a 64 finish and took out 107 on tops to move into the final.
