GARY ANDERSON picked up his fifth PDC ProTour win of 2014 as he overcame fellow Scotsman Robert Thornton 6-2 in the final of Saturday's Players Championship in Coventry.
Scottish ace Anderson's fine form this year continued as he won a third Players Championship to follow up his German Darts Championship and Coral UK Open Qualifier triumphs earlier in 2014.
The former Premier League Darts champion defeated Colin Lloyd, Daryl Gurney, John Part and Simon Whitlock to win through to the last eight, where he knocked out Terry Temple 6-0 with a superb average of 109.98.
The Scotsman then eased past the Bradford youngster Joe Cullen in the semi-finals to set up an all-Scottish final against fellow Premier League star Robert Thornton.
The opening leg of the final saw Anderson take out double 18 to break the Thornton throw, but Thornton broke straight back to level the score.
Anderson then stamped his authority on the match by winning the next four straight legs to race into a 5-1 lead.
Thornton took leg seven, but with Anderson throwing some great darts and averaging just over 100, there was only going to be the one winner as 12-dart leg saw Anderson claim victory and the £10,000 winners prize.
Sunday will see a second Players Championship complete the PDC ProTour weekend in Coventry, with a further £50,000 in prize money on offer.
