Battling Wade Edges Crawley Triumph

JAMES WADE'S superb run of form continued as he enjoyed a 6-5 comeback win over Kim Huybrechts in the final of Players Championship 17 in Crawley on Saturday.

The left-hander hit a memorable double-start nine-darter on his way to the partypoker.com World Grand Prix last week, and followed up June's Gibraltar Darts Trophy triumph with a second ranking win of the year.

In doing so, Wade consolidated his position as sixth in the PDC Order of Merit ahead of Gary Anderson - who he came from 4-2 down against to claim a semi-final win on Saturday - as well as closing the gap on Peter Wright and Simon Whitlock above him in the world rankings with £10,000 prize money.

Wade kicked off his day with a whitewash of German youngster Max Hopp, and then saw off Gerwyn Price, Wes Newton and Jelle Klaasen to reach the quarter-finals, where he edged out Robert Thornton 6-5 in a game of the highest quality.

Wade again showed his battling spirit in the semis as he overcame Anderson 6-4, before repeating his comeback in the decider against Huybrechts.

After the left-hander took out 84 to win the opening leg, the Belgian landed a 180 as he levelled before finishing 170 to break and move 2-1 up.

Huybrechts then extended his lead to 3-1 after Wade missed his chance to level in leg four, with the pair trading 180s as they shared the next two legs before Wade finished 101 to pull back to 4-3.

Huybrechts posted double 18 to complete a 13-darter as he took a 5-3 lead, but Wade hit back in 14 darts and then won leg ten - as the Belgian missed his chance to claim victory - to send the game into a decider.

Wade, with the advantage of throw, scored 100, 180 and 140 to be first to a finish, and hit double six to seal the victory.

Huybrechts was left to settle for the £5,000 runner-up prize as he won through to his first ranking final for almost 12 months, since he claimed the Dutch Darts Masters title at the end of October 2013.

The Belgian followed up a first round defeat of James Richardson with a narrow 6-5 defeat of Austria's Mensur Suljovic, and after seeing off Hong Kong's Scott Mackenzie was then taken all the way by Ronnie Baxter in the last 16.

He then enjoyed back-to-back 6-3 victories over Steve Beaton and World Champion Michael van Gerwen as he reached the final, but agonisingly missed out on the title.

World Grand Prix winner van Gerwen overcame Jamie Bain, Nigel Heydon, Royden Lam, Stephen Bunting, and Benito van de Pas as he reached the last four on the day.

He was joined in the semi-finals by Gary Anderson, whose bid for a seventh ranking victory of the year had seen him defeat Chris Aubrey, Matt Padgett, Raymond van Barneveld, Jay Foreman and Darren Webster - with a ten-minute whitewash - before he lost out to Wade.

Dutch youngster van de Pas continued his emergence on the PDC circuit with his run to the last eight, alongside Thornton, Beaton and Webster, while Lakeside Champion Bunting was joined in the last 16 by by Dutch duo Vincent van der Voort and Jelle Klaasen.

Sunday will see a second Players Championship take place at the K2 Centre in Crawley, in the final ranking event before the top 16 players from the PDC Order of Merit qualify for The Unibet Masters, which will be held at Edinburgh's Royal Highland Centre on November 1-2.

Sunday's tournament also completes the penultimate PDC ProTour weekend of the year, with only the double-header in Coventry on November 22-23 to follow before the fields for the Cash Converters Players Championship Finals and William Hill World Darts Championship are finalised.

The double-header of £50,000 Players Championships are also the last events to be held ahead of next weekend's European Championship, which will be held from October 24-26 at the RWE Sporthalle, Muelheim, and shown live on ITV4.
