Van Gerwen Denies Wade Crawley Double

VAN GERWEN DENIES WADE A CRAWLEY DOUBLE

MICHAEL VAN GERWEN denied James Wade a Players Championship double as he claimed a 6-2 victory over his rival in Sunday's tournament in Crawley.

Wade had picked up the £10,000 title by winning Saturday's Players Championship at The K2 Centre, and lined himself up for a memorable ProTour double by reaching the decider 24 hours later.

However, he would suffer defeat to van Gerwen for the second successive Sunday as the Dutch ace followed up last week's partypoker.com World Grand Prix triumph with another victory over the in-form world number six.

Van Gerwen had already defeated top 16 rivals Raymond van Barneveld and Peter Wright on Sunday, and enjoyed victories over former World Youth Champion James Hubbard, emerging Welshman Gerwyn Price, Jamie Caven and Jyhan Artut on his way to the final.

He took out tops and double nine to win the opening two legs of the decider, with Wade taking advantage of two misses from the World Champion at double eight in leg three as he posted double two to get off the mark, before landing tops to level.

Wade, though, was left waiting on 40 in the next two legs as van Gerwen finished a pair of 14-darters to regain his cushion at 4-2, finished tops to move three legs clear and then sealed victory with a 122 finish.

Wade's run to the final had included a 6-3 win over Kim Huybrechts in a repeat of Saturday's final, while he also whitewashed Terry Jenkins and overcame Paul Amos, Magnus Caris, Darren Webster and Andrew Gilding as he took home £15,000 prize money for the weekend.

Huybrechts followed up his run on Saturday by reaching the last four on Sunday, edging out Mark Walsh in his first round game before seeing off Joe Lacey, Mark Forman, Simon Whitlock and Vincent van der Voort.

German ace Artut warmed up for next week's European Championship with only his second PDC ranking semi-final, as he defeated Steve Grubb, Ron Meulenkamp, Chris Aubrey, Steve Beaton and Ian White in an impressive day.

Artut's quarter-final win over Ian White ended the Stoke ace's hopes of breaking back into the world's top 16, with Sunday's event being the last before the cut-off for The Unibet Masters.

Jenkins had averaged over 110 in a brilliant 6-4 win over Gary Anderson in the last 16, but was unable to repeat the performance against Wade as he fell to a quarter-final whitewash defeat against Wade.

Wright also saw his hopes ended in the quarter-finals in a repeat of January's World Championship final as he lost out to van Gerwen, while Dutch ace van der Voort was knocked out by Huybrechts in the last eight.

White's result means that Raymond van Barneveld - a loser to fellow countryman van Gerwen in the last 32 on Sunday - retains his status in the top 16 to qualify for the £160,000 event.

The Unibet Masters will be held at the Royal Highland Centre in Edinburgh on November 1-2, live on ITV4. Tickets are still available via pdc.seetickets.com or by calling 0844 871 8807. The draw and schedule of play will be announced on Monday.

However, the PDC's stars will first head to Germany next weekend for the European Championship, which will be held from October 24-26 at the RWE Sporthalle in Muelheim, also live on ITV4.

Reigning champion Adrian Lewis and four-time winner Phil Taylor opted not to compete in Crawley ahead of the three-day tournament in Germany.
