CADBY ENDS TAYLOR RECORD WITH TABTOUCH PERTH DARTS MASTERS STUNNER

COREY CADBY produced a stunning performance to end Phil Taylor's incredible winning record in Australia with a 6-2 triumph in the TABtouch Perth Darts Masters first round at the PCEC on Thursday.

The 21-year-old has been a sensation on the DPA Australian Grand Prix circuit this year, winning seven tournaments since relocating from Tasmania to Melbourne.

The youngster made his TV debut in defeat to Taylor at the Sydney Darts Masters last week, before seeing the 16-time World Champion go on to win his sixth successive World Series title in Australia.

However, Taylor's bid to retain the Perth Darts Masters title with a third win in as many years was shattered by a stunning display of finishing by Cadby, who also hit four 180s and averaged 103.58.

Early checkouts of 100 and 110 helped give Cadby the edge at 1-0 and 2-1, with Taylor levelling in the second and fourth legs before seeing his opponent finish 72 to move back ahead in the fifth.

Cadby then traded 180s with his rival in the sixth before taking out a superb 122 checkout to break throw, and landed further maximums in the next two to punish missed doubles from Taylor - who averaged almost 112 - to seal a memorable triumph.

"I don't know what to say, it's an amazing moment!" said Cadby. "I'm buzzing, it's a proud moment and the best moment of my darts career.

"I felt confident last week, for my first TV game I did well and I knew where I went wrong. I fixed them this week and it's paid off. It was revenge, it's great.

"I knew what I had to throw to beat Phil. He's the greatest player ever I'm glad someone stopped his record in Australia."

Cadby now takes on Peter Wright in Friday's quarter-finals, after the world number five overcame a scare and a change of darts to defeat Perth-based truck driver Adam Rowe 6-4.

Rowe had won through the qualifiers for a second successive year and led 2-1 early on before taking out a brilliant 156 checkout to tie the game in leg eight, only to see Wright claim a crucial break of throw in leg nine before sealing a hard-fought win.

"It wasn't great so I'm happy just to get over the line," said Wright. "I'm looking for that extra one or two percent and the best time to try a different set is under that pressure.

"It would have been my fault if I lost but I took that chance. The darts I used in the first half of the game were a bit up and down."

Home-town hero Kyle Anderson was punished for missed doubles as world number one Michael van Gerwen avoided a potential upset by claiming a 6-4 victory over the Perth star.

Anderson led 2-1 early on, but missed darts to win the next three legs as van Gerwen put himself into a 4-2 lead, before finishing 74 to move to the brink of victory and have enough breathing space to hold off his rival's late rally.

2014 Perth Darts Masters runner-up van Gerwen will now meet last year's beaten finalist James Wade in Friday's quarter-finals, after the left-hander climbed off his sickbed to whitewash Rob Szabo 6-0.

Wade had been laid low by a virus since arriving in Perth on Sunday, but averaged 96 and hit 50 percent of his darts at a double during a strong performance to progress.

World Champion Gary Anderson defeated Kim Lewis in Perth for a second successive year as he recorded two 11-dart finishes in his last two winning legs of a 6-3 win over the qualifier.

Anderson now plays Dave Chisnall, who impressed as he landed four 180s, hit half of his attempts at a double and dropped only one leg to see off New Zealand-born Koha Kokiri, who was unable to recover after seeing his opponent win the first five legs without reply.

Adrian Lewis held off the challenge of experienced David Platt to claim a 6-3 win over the Perth-based DPA number one, who had missed five darts at doubles in the opening two legs and was always playing catch-up against the two-time World Champion.

Lewis now meets Raymond van Barneveld in a repeat of last year's Auckland Darts Masters final, with the Dutch star bouncing back from his first round loss in Sydney with four 180s and six doubles from 12 attempts as he overcame Simon Whitlock 6-2.

Australian ace Whitlock led 1-0 and 2-1 early on, but missed doubles in the next two allowed the five-time World Champion to seize the initiative as five straight legs saw him progress.
