Clinical Wright's Aiming High

Peter Wright - Betway Premier League (Michael Cooper, PDC)

PETER WRIGHT is aiming to continue his winning form and secure a Betway Premier League Play-Off spot on Thursday, when he meets Phil Taylor in Birmingham.

The UK Open champion claimed his sixth tournament victory of 2017 at the HappyBet German Darts Open on Sunday with another fine weekend of darts.

The win was the world number three's second European Tour success of the year, as he took out a brilliant 121 checkout in the deciding leg of his final with Benito van de Pas.

"It was probably one of the hardest; for the pressure of the short distance and the way Benito was playing, I had to take my doubles out and I did," said Wright.

"I've practised to make sure you have a C-game, a B-game that's good enough to get past the players you're playing. You don't have to throw your A-game all the time to win tournaments, you just have to play the game in front of you.

"Benito's a fantastic player and you've got to hit the double at the right time, and I did. Lucky enough he gave me the shot at the 121 and I took it."

Wright sits second in the Betway Premier League table going into the season's 13th league night in Birmingham on Thursday, where he takes on Phil Taylor, the six-time champion who is in his farewell season.

A win is likely to mathematically secure Wright's first-ever appearance in the Premier League's Play-Offs in his fourth season in the event.

"I'm in with a chance of getting into the semi-finals, and hopefully I'll make it," he added.

"Phil beat me last time we played, but I want to get him back this week. He's so relaxed that he doesn't care, and that's why he's dangerous now.

"He's going to be a major threat to the title. He's not rolling over because it's his last year, he's up there with the attitude to fight for every leg so hats off to him."

Wright had defeated James Wade a week ago to claim his first Premier League win of the month, and still has hopes of challenging Michael van Gerwen for the £25,000 League Winner's Bonus.

"I wasn't at my best last week and I was lucky enough to get the win," he admitted. "There are only three games left and I'm in a good position but it's not over yet so I've got to carry on trying to win.

"Michael's got some tough games ahead so I want to keep pushing and try and finish number one."
