In focus: The 2020 Betfred World Matchplay debutants

World Matchplay debutants

We take a closer look at the four players will make their Betfred World Matchplay debuts over the next four nights.

1. Ryan Joyce

Ryan Joyce

Current ranking: 42
Best TV performance: 2018/19 World Championship (quarter-finals)
Qualified via: ProTour Order of Merit (10th)
First round opponent: Simon Whitlock (Saturday July 18)

A surprise run to a Players Championship title at last week's Summer Series saw Ryan Joyce make a late move into the qualification places.

Having fought back from 7-2 down to defeat Dave Chisnall in the final, Joyce admitted in his post-match interview that he wasn't even thinking about qualifying for the World Matchplay.

The 34-year-old Geordie burst onto the scene on his World Championship debut in 2018/19, defeating James Wade on an incredible run to the last eight.

Since then, Joyce has reached the latter stages of Players Championship events on a number of occasions, helping him to feature twice in the UK Open and another World Championship.

2. Gabriel Clemens

Gabriel Clemens

Current ranking: 40
Best TV performance: 2019 German Darts Masters (runner-up)
Qualified via: ProTour Order of Merit (6th)
First round opponent: Rob Cross (Sunday July 19)

There will be German representation at the World Matchplay for a third consecutive year, but this year in the form of Gabriel Clemens rather than Max Hopp.

'German Giant' Clemens has made huge strides over the last two years, going deep in many Players Championship events to propel himself up the rankings.

His finest moment on TV saw him reach the final of the 2019 German Darts Masters, where he went down to Peter Wright.

Clemens will now be looking to make his mark in a ranking TV event, and his World Matchplay journey will begin against reigning champion Rob Cross.

3. Jose De Sousa

Jose De Sousa

Current ranking: 51
Best TV performance: 2019 Players Championship Finals (last 32)
Qualified via: ProTour Order of Merit (3rd)
First round opponent: Peter Wright (Sunday July 19)

Jose De Sousa's place in the 32-player field will come as no surprise to regular PDCTV viewers, as the Portuguese number one has burst onto the ProTour scene over the last 18 months.

Having spent years away from the game, De Sousa won his PDC Tour Card for the first time in January 2019 and went on to win two Players Championship events in his first year on tour.

Despite suffering a disappointing 3-0 loss to Damon Heta at the World Championship, 'The Special One' has bounced back with more strong displays in 2020, most recently finishing in the top ten of the Summer Series Order of Merit.

De Sousa has made a name of himself as one of the most relentless treble 20 hitters on the circuit, and he will need every ounce of scoring power to cause an upset against Peter Wright.

4. Dimitri Van den Bergh

Dimitri Van den Bergh

Current ranking: 26
Best TV performance: 2018 German Darts Masters (runner-up)
Qualified via: ProTour Order of Merit (11th)
First round opponent: Nathan Aspinall (Tuesday July 21)

It will perhaps be a surprise to many that this will be Dimitri Van den Bergh's World Matchplay debut, with the Belgian having featured regularly in TV events for the past few years.

Having come close on a number of occasions, Van den Bergh's ProTour form improved sufficiently over the last 12 months to ensure he wouldn't miss out on a maiden World Matchplay berth this time around.

A two-time World Youth Champion, Van den Bergh has often described himself as a 'big stage player', best shown by his run to the 2018 German Darts Masters final.

Still aged just 26, Van den Bergh is one of the sport's most exciting prospects and there is evidence to suggest he could cause an upset against Nathan Aspinall, having reached the quarter-finals of his last two TV events, the 2019/20 World Championship and 2020 UK Open.
