Superb Smith secures Cazoo Grand Slam of Darts qualification

Ross Smith (Karim Rahnama/PDC Europe)

Ross Smith became the latest player to secure qualification for the 2022 Cazoo Grand Slam of Darts on Sunday, following his sensational Cazoo European Championship success in Dortmund.

Smith defeated his namesake Michael Smith 11-8 in a thrilling final at the Westfalenhalle to scoop the £120,000 top prize, having also dumped out World Champion Peter Wright and Masters winner Joe Cullen en route to the title.

The 33-year-old will now make his third Grand Slam appearance in Wolverhampton from November 12-20, with nine places in next month’s event still up for grabs.

The European Championship marked the final televised event for the finalists to secure automatic qualification for the Grand Slam, with 14 different players securing Wolverhampton spots through that route.

Luke Humphries will also qualify by right after winning four European Tour events this year, with the 16th automatic place to be confirmed following Saturday's completion of the 2022 Players Championship series.

The conclusion of the PDC's secondary tours has seen Scott Williams, Josh Rock and Lisa Ashton confirmed as qualifiers from the respective Challenge Tour, Development Tour and Women's Series Orders of Merit.

As a result, 23 players are now guaranteed places in this year’s Grand Slam, which will see 32 players competing in group and knockout stages for the coveted Eric Bristow Trophy and £650,000 in prize money at the Aldersley Leisure Village.

Reigning champion Gerwyn Price, who is eyeing his fourth Grand Slam crown in 2022, headlines this year’s field alongside Wright and three-time winner Michael van Gerwen.

The world’s top three will be joined in Wolverhampton by Masters champion Joe Cullen, UK Open winner Danny Noppert and newly crowned European Champion Smith.

Damon Heta and Simon Whitlock will also feature in this year’s showpiece after guiding Australia to their maiden Cazoo World Cup of Darts success in June.

Michael Smith, Dave Chisnall, Ryan Searle. Jonny Clayton, Dirk van Duijvenbode and Nathan Aspinall make up the confirmed qualifiers after reaching TV finals in the past year.

The final place among the 16 automatic qualifiers will be decided following this weekend’s Players Championship double-header in Barnsley, with Rob Cross currently occupying the last provisional qualification spot following two event wins in 2022 so far.

The 32-player field will be finalised on Sunday November 6, when a further eight players will come through the PDC Tour Card Holder Qualifier at the Barnsley Metrodome.

Jose De Sousa, who lifted the Grand Slam title in 2020, is yet to book his Wolverhampton return, while James Wade and Gary Anderson face a battle to preserve their ever-present records in the tournament.
