WDDA stars return for big-stage appearances in Blackpool

WDDA World Matchplay (PDC)

The PDC will again be supporting the World Disability Darts Association during the 2023 Betfred World Matchplay, as the organisation stages its own World Matchplay Finals on stage.

Last year saw six players from the World Disability Darts Association across three categories earn the chance to experience the unique Winter Gardens atmosphere for the first time.

Finals in the Ladies, Classic and Compris categories of the WDDA's World Matchplay events were held on stage, with Debbie McBride, Paul Hampton and Jordon Sheppard winning their respective titles.

McBride and Sheppard also returned to the Winter Gardens stage to be part of Betfred's Nine-Dart Challenge charity activity before the World Matchplay action began, with the title sponsors in Blackpool donating £1 per point scored to Macmillan Cancer Support.

This year's events will be preceded earlier on each afternoon by the semi-finals as four players in each category are welcomed by the PDC to Blackpool.

Rab Sutherland, who was the runner-up in last year's Compris final, is one of the semi-finalists this time around, while son Robert Sutherland Jnr is one of the last four in the Classic category.

Aged just 14, Robert Sutherland Jnr has been competing for three years since first taking part in Disability Darts Scotland events.

The talented youngster also plays in the Junior Darts Corporation's Fife Academy and has represented Scotland in the JDC, as well as being a Youth Ambassador now for Disability Darts Scotland.

Avril Patrick was the Women's runner-up in 2022, while Patrick Kulmala has travelled from Finland to compete in the tournament’s Classic event.

Players can compete in the following categories in WDDA events:

Classic - players with upper and/or lower body impairment + Paralympic conditions + wheelchair users.

Compris - inclusive division for all with disabilities and those with Government-recognised mental & physical impairments.

Ladies - for women's players in the Classic & Compris divisions.
