Daily Mirror GSOD Day Two

TONY O'SHEA and Robert Thornton booked their places in the second round of the Daily Mirror Grand Slam of Darts on Sunday evening.

O'Shea, a quarter-finalist in last year's tournament, continued his impressive start to the £400,000 event with a 5-1 win over PDC world number two James Wade.

Thornton, meanwhile, produced his finest televised performance for 18 months with a 5-2 win over Dave Chisnall, who took out finishes of 118 and 116 for his two legs but could not match the Scot's scoring.

Thornton's win meant Australian Simon Whitlock was eliminated after he followed up his opening day defeat to Chisnall with a 5-4 win over resurgent Colin Osborne, who now takes on Chisnall on Tuesday for a place in the last 16.

Mervyn King put one foot into the second round thanks to his 5-3 win over Terry Jenkins as he remained unbeaten, with John Henderson seeing off Stacy Bromberg 5-2 in the other Group C contest.

Gary Anderson also remained unbeaten in Group B after two games, winning 5-2 against home favourite Wayne Jones, while Mark Webster's hopes remain alive after his 5-3 defeat of Mark Hylton.

Earlier, reigning champion Phil Taylor made a winning start to life with glasses, defeating Michael van Gerwen 5-1 in his first appearance wearing spectacles on stage.

Taylor, the 15-time World Champion and three-time Grand Slam winner, has recently been prescribed glasses to aid his long sight, and the 50-year-old showed few signs of weakness in a winning start to Group H.

Although both players took their time to get going in a scrappy opening, Taylor won five successive legs in taking victory to set up a second group game against Potteries rival Ted Hankey on Monday night.

Hankey also made a winning start to the event, defeating Wes Newton 5-3 with a strong display.

Five-time World Champion Raymond van Barneveld opened his challenge for a first Grand Slam title with a whitewash of Women's World Championship finalist Tricia Wright.

Van Barneveld now faces Colin Lloyd in their second Group F match, after the Essex ace held off Darryl Fitton in a deciding leg.

2009 Grand Slam of Darts runner-up Scott Waites was another final-leg winner, with Co Stompe hitting back from 4-0 down to level in their clash before the Yorkshireman edged the decider after his opponent missed one dart to steal victory.

Waites will meet Martin Phillips on Monday night, after the Welsh left-hander enjoyed a superb debut at the Grand Slam of Darts with a 5-2 win over Adrian Lewis, which was sealed with a 101 finish.

Paul Nicholson, the number eight seed, denied Arron Monk a winning debut with a deciding-leg victory in their Group G game, with Ronnie Baxter defeating Steve Beaton 5-2 in the other contest.

AFTERNOON SESSION
SCOTT WAITES 5-4 CO STOMPE

SCOTT WAITES won a dramatic final-leg thriller against Co Stompe to begin his Daily Mirror Grand Slam of Darts challenge with a win after the Dutchman came from 4-0 down to take the match all the way.

Waites, who was the runner-up in last year's Grand Slam of Darts, made a sensational start to move 4-0 without Stompe having a dart at a double in the first three legs.

The Dutchman, though, clawed back into the game and took four successive legs of his own to force a decider as Waites wobbled at the finishing line - only to miss one dart for the game as the Yorkshireman edged to victory.

Stompe started well, hitting a 180 in the first leg, but was waiting on 40 as Waites finished 66 to take the opener.

Waites then hit 180s of his own in the next two, with a brace of double top finishes moving him 3-0 up.

Waites also landed a maximum in the fourth, but seven misses at double 12 allowed Stompe in for his first glimpse of a finish, but two misses at double top gave the Yorkshireman a reprieve, which he took for a commanding lead at the break.

The pair traded 180s after the restart, with a 13-darter from Stompe getting him onto the scoreboard and kick-starting his challenge.

He took the next on double three and won leg seven courtesy of a double eight finish set up with a 162 score.

Waites opened the eighth with scores of 174 and 140, but missed the bull for a 127 game shot as Stompe landed tops for a 77 checkout to level and force a decider.

Waites, with the advantage of throw, kicked off with another 180 and a 140, but missed two darts at double 18 and one at double nine as Stompe returned on 72.

But the Dutchman was unable to land double four to snatch a remarkable win as Waites returned to land double nine to finally close out victory.

"I got off to a fast start but the break killed me and the next thing I knew it, it was four-all," said Waites. "I've been working on my finishing and that showed at the start, but it's good to get a win."

Stompe added: "I started okay in the first leg but losing that leg hurt me. At 4-0 down I wanted to dig in and take one leg at a time and I pulled it back but just didn't get the win."

COLIN LLOYD 5-4 DARRYL FITTON
COLIN LLOYD edged a dramatic nine-leg thriller with Darryl Fitton to take victory in their Group F opener at the Daily Mirror Grand Slam of Darts.

The pair traded legs throughout a tight contest, with Lloyd posting a 170 finish early on but paying for missed match darts in two legs as Fitton forced a decider.

However, the Stockport ace missed one match dart in the final leg before Lloyd returned to land double eight for the win.

"Darryl's a class player who I've known for a lot of years but he missed a few doubles," said Lloyd. "I missed a few doubles too but I hung in and got the result."

Fitton took the game's opening leg on double 14, but Lloyd landed double 16 to get off the mark in the second before replying to a 180 from his opponent with a sensational 170 checkout to break for a 2-1 lead.

Fitton broke back on double nine, but Lloyd hit scores of 171 and 180 in edging the fifth - albeit after missing five doubles before the Stockport man saw four chances to steal the leg go begging.

The pair hit 180s in the sixth, with Fitton being punished for a missed double top, for a 119 checkout, as Lloyd posted double eight.

Lloyd landed a 180 in being first to the finish in the seven, but missed two darts at double 16 for the match as Fitton took out 330 in six brilliant darts, hitting a maximum and a 150 finish.

Lloyd then missed the bull for victory in the eighth, as Fitton forced a decider on double eight.

Lloyd again wired the bullseye for the win, but Fitton missed double top for a 118 finish to snatch victory and Lloyd held his nerve to hit double eight to take the two points.

PAUL NICHOLSON 5-4 ARRON MONK
PAUL NICHOLSON made a winning return to the Daily Mirror Grand Slam of Darts, squeezing past Arron Monk 5-4 in their opening Group G contest.

Nicholson previously competed at the Wolverhampton Civic Hall during the 2008 Grand Slam, and began his second tilt at the £100,000 title successfully.

Monk, who qualified by reaching the final of the PDC Unicorn Under-21 World Championship last weekend, performed well on his debut in the event, but crucially failed to break Nicholson's throw to be denied.

Nicholson made a dream start, taking out 111 in the opening leg, before Monk landed double top at the first time of asking to level in the second.

The pair also traded the next two before 20-year-old Monk missed two darts to break in the next, with Nicholson following up an earlier 180 with double 12 to hold throw.

Monk hit a maximum and double top to take the sixth, but was unable to capitalise on three misses from January's Players Championship Finals winner, who returned to land double eight for a 4-3 lead.

A 67 finish from Monk sent the match into a decider, but he could only wait on 60 when Nicholson finished 82 with bullseye and double 16 to take the points.

"I'm very pleased with that," said Nicholson. "My performance was pretty good and I was pushed hard by Arron. He's got a massive future and he showed a lot of quality in that match."

TED HANKEY 5-3 WES NEWTON
TED HANKEY made a solid start to his second Daily Mirror Grand Slam of Darts challenge, taking a 5-3 win against Wes Newton in their Group H opener.

The pair have been drawn alongside Phil Taylor and Michael van Gerwen in what has been dubbed the 'Group of Death', and it was Hankey - nicknamed The Count - who drew first blood.

Hankey was a group stage loser in last year's Grand Slam of Darts and notoriously clashed with the Wolves Civic crowd, but professionally disposed of Newton.

The pair traded the first two legs before Hankey took the third on double ten before breaking on double four for a 3-1 lead.

Newton punished four misses from the two-time Lakeside Champion to take the fifth on double four, and defied a 180 from Hankey to win the sixth and level.

However, he was left waiting on 52 when Hankey took the next with a two-dart 80 finish before the Telford ace hit another maximum and double ten to seal victory.

"Neither of us played our best games but getting the win was the most important thing," said Hankey. "We both knew it was important to win this game because we're in such a tough group."

RONNIE BAXTER 5-2 STEVE BEATON
RONNIE BAXTER kicked off his Daily Mirror Grand Slam of Darts challenge with a 5-2 win over Steve Beaton at the Wolverhampton Civic Hall.

Baxter found himself 2-1 down early on against the former Lakeside Champion, but won four in a row to put himself into pole position in Group G.

Baxter hit a 180 and a 97 finish to break throw in the game's opening leg, only for Beaton to reply with scores of 180 and 171 in a 12-darter to level.

Beaton then took out 90 to lead 2-1, only for Baxter to find another gear.

He levelled on double four and hit a 177 in the fifth as double two punished two missed darts at tops from Beaton.

Beaton landed another maximum in the next, but Baxter finished 80 on tops for a 4-2 cushion before securing the win on double eight after three missed double tops from his opponent.

"It's a victory and it gets me on the board, which was all that matters," said Baxter. "It wasn't a classic like some of the games we've played but I came through with the win."

Beaton admitted: "It was an edgy game and I was up and down like a yo-yo - I scored well but didn't finish like I can. I've got an uphill battle now and I know I must win my next two games."

MARTIN PHILLIPS 5-2 ADRIAN LEWIS
MARTIN PHILLIPS made a sensational Daily Mirror Grand Slam of Darts debut, powering past Adrian Lewis 5-2 in their opener in the tournament.

The Welshman qualified for the Wolverhampton Civic event by reaching the semi-finals of this year's Lakeside Championship, and reproduced that form to sweep past the Stoke ace.

Phillips settled any nerves with a 177 to set up double 12 in taking the opening leg in 13 darts, although Lewis replied with a break of throw in 12 darts, kicking off with a 180 and finishing 128.

Lewis also opened the third with a maximum, but double eight saw Phillips again break throw before the Welshman missed tops for a 3-1 lead, as Lewis hit double one to level at two-all.

Phillips, though, produced a fine 12-darter to break again in the fifth, hitting three 140s and an 81 finish, and then punished two misses from Lewis to land double two for a 4-2 cushion.

Lewis battled to keep the game alive in the next, but Phillips took out 101 on double 12 to complete a fine victory, ending with a 97 average and a 50 percent checkout ratio.

"I went up there to enjoy myself and I certainly did that," said Phillips. "I'm very happy but I don't want to get ahead of myself because this is just one win and there are two more games left."

RAYMOND VAN BARNEVELD 5-0 TRICIA WRIGHT
RAYMOND VAN BARNEVELD swept aside the challenge of Tricia Wright with a whitewash victory in their battle of the sexes at the Daily Mirror Grand Slam of Darts.

Wright earned a debut in the Grand Slam of Darts by reaching the final of the PDC Unicorn Women's World Championship in July, but came undone as the five-time World Champion made a strong start in Wolverhampton.

The Dutchman had won the pre-match bullseye but gave the throw to Wright, and secured an immediate break on double 16 before landing double nine for the second leg after earlier missing double 18 for a 156 checkout.

He finished 80 on double ten to win the third leg before a miss in the fourth gave Wright a sniff on 92, only for the Surrey-based female to miss double 16 and double eight to get off the mark, with double three giving van Barneveld a fourth leg.

Wright also had a chance in the fifth, but was unable to finish 158 as van Barneveld posted double top for a flawless start.

"I'm happy with that because I can't do anything more than win 5-0," said van Barneveld. "My average wasn't brilliant but I did the job and am looking forward to two more good group games now."

PHIL TAYLOR 5-1 MICHAEL VAN GERWEN
REIGNING Daily Mirror Grand Slam of Darts champion Phil Taylor made a winning start to life with glasses, defeating Michael van Gerwen 5-1 in his first appearance wearing spectacles on stage.

"My glasses aren't too strong but I can see more clearly and I can see what I'm aiming at now!" revealed Taylor. "I've had reading glasses for a couple of years but got re-tested and my long sight is going a little bit.

"I'll see a specialist after the Grand Slam is over to see if I'd need any laser surgery but it's a case of so far, so good in this event and I'd love to keep hold of the title."

Taylor took a little time to find his focus in the opening leg, missing six darts to take the lead as van Gerwen took out double 16 to lead.

The Dutch youngster, though, failed to produce the explosive scoring which brought him to prominence as a teenager as Taylor replied in 14 darters and broke throw in the third leg on double two, after van Gerwen missed one dart at double 18.

Van Gerwen showed his frustration in the fourth as Taylor hit double eight to enter the break 3-1 up, and the lead was extended to three legs in the next, after the youngster missed the bull for a 167 finish.

Taylor then wrapped up the win with his best leg of the match, posting his first 180 and double 16 for a 13-darter.

"Michael didn't play anywhere near as well as he can and didn't put me under pressure, but all I can do is win," said Taylor, who now takes on two-time Lakeside Champion Hankey on Monday night.

"I'm really looking forward to playing Ted and I know it's a match the fans will want to see too," said Taylor. "Just because we've both won one game we can't relax and it will be a belter."

EVENING SESSION
VINCENT VAN DER VOORT 5-1 JUSTIN PIPE

VINCENT VAN DER VOORT got his campaign in the Daily Mirror Grand Slam of Darts back on track with a 5-1 win over Justin Pipe in their second Group D game.

Van der Voort bounced back from Saturday's loss to Tony O'Shea in style against the ITV Wildcard Qualifier, whose hopes of progressing in the tournament hang by a thread following a second successive loss.

The Dutchman made an immediate impact with a break of throw in the opening leg on double top, and he hit a 180 and double ten in moving 2-0 up.

Pipe, who had gone down to James Wade on the opening night, got on the scoreboard by taking the third, but saw van der Voort power in another maximum and double 16 for a 3-1 cushion at the break.

Pipe was unable to punish missed doubles from van der Voort in the fifth leg as double four put the Dutch ace a leg away from victory, which was sealed in the same manner in the next leg.

MARK WEBSTER 5-3 MARK HYLTON
MARK WEBSTER kick-started his Daily Mirror Grand Slam of Darts challenge with a 5-3 victory over Mark Hylton in their second Group B game at the Wolverhampton Civic Hall.

Webster had slumped to a 5-2 defeat against home favourite Wayne Jones on Saturday night, but responded with a strong performance against the ITV Wildcard Qualifier, who was making only his third televised appearance.

Newcomer Hylton, a former airline cabin manager from Rugeley, landed double top and double ten to hold throw in the opening three legs as he led 2-1.

Webster hit a second double six of the game to level in the fourth, before a miss at tops from Hylton allowed him in to hit the same bed in breaking throw.

Webster landed a 180 for a second successive leg on his way to the sixth, which he again took on tops, before missing the same bed as Hylton landed double six to win a third leg.

Webster, though, hit another maximum to open the next and had the breathing space despite a 180 from Hylton to seal the win on his favoured double top.

"I knew I had a tough game today but I had to go up there and get a win and I've done that," said Webster. "I've given myself a chance of going through and I can get ready for Tuesday night against Gary Anderson now."

Hylton, who will play Jones in his final group game, admitted: "I thoroughly enjoyed the game again and it's a learning curve for me. I relaxed a bit more tonight and am improving, and hopefully I can go better again on Tuesday."

JOHN HENDERSON 5-2 STACY BROMBERG
JOHN HENDERSON held off Stacy Bromberg's fightback to pick up a 5-2 victory in their second Group B game at the Daily Mirror Grand Slam of Darts.

Scotsman Henderson, an ITV Wildcard Qualifier for the Wolverhampton event, responded well to his opening loss to Terry Jenkins by leading 3-0 against the American ace.

However, Bromberg took back-to-back legs to pull back to 3-2 and threaten an upset, only for Henderson to take out a 12-darter to steady his nerves before sealing the win.

Henderson made an ideal start by taking out 116 in the game's opening leg, and double eight saw him move 2-0 up.

He also landed a 180 in the third, and after initially missing three darts at tops he returned to hit the bed, with Bromberg having left herself on 40.

The PDC Unicorn Women's World Champion continued her improvement in the next, stepping in after five misses from Henderson to post double 16 and get off the mark.

She also landed double top to win the fifth and pull back to 3-2, but Henderson produced a brilliant leg to stop her comeback in its tracks - hitting scores of 180, 100 and 180 before landing double top for a 12-darter.

The Scot then edged away in the seventh, and took out 80 in two darts to secure the two points.

"It was hard because everyone expects you to beat the women players but Stacy did well," said Henderson. "She's improved and I had to pull out some good darts to beat her."

Bromberg admitted: "I enjoyed it much more than when I played Mervyn King on Saturday and it's a whole lotta fun on stage! The crowd were great and they make the tournament what it is, and I love them.

"I got one leg against Mervyn and two against John, so I'll hope to keep improving against Terry Jenkins on Tuesday."

COLIN OSBORNE 5-4 SIMON WHITLOCK
COLIN OSBORNE produced one of his finest televised performances to defeat Simon Whitlock 5-4 in a thriller as he ended the Australian's hopes at the Daily Mirror Grand Slam of Darts.

The pair responded superbly to defeats in Saturday's opening games to average over 100 for most of an absorbing contest, with Osborne eventually prevailing in a deciding leg.

Osborne, who had been defeated by Robert Thornton in his opening game, took out 118 to win the opening leg and opened the second with a 180 but paid for a missed bullseye as Whitlock posted tops to level.

Double 16 gave Osborne the third but Whitlock roared back with scores of 171 and 180 before finishing 92 for a 12-darter to square the match.

An 86 finish for a 14-darter put the Australian 3-2 up, but Osborne responded to a 177 from Whitlock with a 180 of his own and double 16 to break back and level in the sixth before finishing 79 on double 11 for a 4-3 lead.

The Derby-based star gave himself a dart for victory in the eighth, but missed the bull for a 164 finish as Whitlock posted double ten to force a decider.

Whitlock, against the throw, opened with a 180, but Osborne was first to a finish and left double 16 to take the win, averaging almost 100 and checking out 63 percent of his chances.

"I was embarrassed after losing 5-2 to Robert on Saturday and had a point to prove tonight, and I went on stage to enjoy the game and express myself," said Osborne.

"I've been waiting a long time to play that well on stage because after reaching the UK Open final and winning the Championship League Darts last year I promised a lot and have failed to deliver.

"It's in my own hands now for me to get through to the last 16 and I can look forward to playing Dave Chisnall on Tuesday."

The defeat, coupled with Thornton's later win over Chisnall, means Whitlock's challenge in the tournament will end in the group stage, with Osborne meeting Chisnall in a winner-progresses clash.

ROBERT THORNTON 5-2 DAVE CHISNALL
ROBERT THORNTON ensured progression to the second round of the Daily Mirror Grand Slam of Darts, maintaining his unbeaten start in the group stage with a 5-2 win over Dave Chisnall.

Chisnall had impressed in his victory over Simon Whitlock on his Grand Slam debut on Saturday, but even two ton-plus finishes were not enough against an inspired Thornton.

The pair traded 180s in the game's opening leg, which Thornton took on double 18, before Chisnall levelled with a 118 finish on double 19.

Double four edged Thornton back in front before Chisnall followed up scores of 140 and 180 with a 116 checkout to square the game.

Thornton, though, returned from the break to miss the bull for a 161 finish before returning to post double eight, before a 174 score set up double 16 as he edged 4-2 up.

The Scot then sealed the win in style, hitting a second 180 of the game and double 16 to complete arguably his best televised display since reaching the 2009 Players Championship Finals decider and seal a last 16 place.

"I'm very happy," said Thornton. "My finished was good and I'm pleased with how I played for most of the game.

"I want to keep it up now and finish top of the group to go into the last 16 on a high, so I'll be going all-out against Simon Whitlock on Tuesday."

TONY O'SHEA 5-1 JAMES WADE
TONY O'SHEA booked his spot in the last 16 of the Daily Mirror Grand Slam of Darts for a second successive year with a resounding 5-1 win over James Wade on Sunday night.

O'Shea, a quarter-finalist in last year's Wolves Civic event, impressed in victory against Vincent van der Voort on Saturday and repeated a convincing scoreline in his second group game.

He made a superb start, opening the match with a 14-darter and punishing misses at double 14 and seven from Wade to double his lead with double ten.

Wade finished double six for a 13-darter to get off the mark, but missed four darts to level in the next as O'Shea entered the break 3-1 up courtesy of another double ten finish.

He hit the bed once more in winning the fifth leg before hitting a 180 and double 16 in the next to wrap up the win and ensure his second round berth.

Wade will now face van der Voort in a winner-progresses clash on Tuesday night as he bids to follow last month's World Grand Prix and Championship League Darts wins with another major.

MERVYN KING put one foot in the second round of the Daily Mirror Grand Slam of Darts, impressing with a 5-3 victory over Terry Jenkins at the Wolves Civic.

King followed up Saturday's win over Stacy Bromberg with his second successive win, and can move into the last 16 unbeaten should he overcome John Henderson on Tuesday night.

The Bradwell-based ace opened the game in brilliant fashion, finishing 158 with treble 19, treble 17 and bull to win the first leg.

Jenkins hit a 180 and double ten to break and level before double three gave him the third leg, and he also missed the bull and double four to lead 3-1 as King finished 64 to square the match.

The pair missed the bull and further darts to take the fifth before King held his nerve on double eight, although after the duo traded 180s in leg six it was Jenkins to hit double four to level at three-all.

They also hit a maximum apiece in the seventh, but Jenkins missed double top for a 145 checkout as King took out 96 with a classy single 20, double 18 and double top combination.

He then pulled away in the next to leave 32, which he took out on double 16 at the first time of asking to seal the win.

"I'm obviously pleased to get another win but I know I can still improve," said King. "I aim to hit an average over 100 in every game I play but I've been below-par for a few months and this is better than I've played for a while.

"Terry's a great player and it was a hard game for me but I won and that's what counts."

He added: "My father passed away recently and I'm here to win this in his memory, because every dart I throw is for him. I'm pleased to still be in the competition after everything that's happened and I'm getting back to where I want to be."

GARY ANDERSON 5-2 WAYNE JONES
GARY ANDERSON recorded his second successive Group B win in the Daily Mirror Grand Slam of Darts, denying home favourite Wayne Jones with a 5-2 victory.

Anderson put a foot into the second round of the event with his win, meaning Jones must defeat Mark Hylton in Tuesday's final group games if he is to progress.

Jones actually took the opening leg against Anderson, who missed double ten for a 140 finish and six further darts to take the lead before Jones sneaked in on double eight.

However, the local favourite was unable to capitalise in the next as Anderson levelled before double top put the Scot ahead.

Jones hit a 180 in the fourth, but missed the bull for an 81 finish and two further darts as Anderson posted tops again for a 3-1 lead at the break.

Jones finished 96 in the fifth to pull back to 3-2, but Anderson found another gear to wrap up victory, hitting a 125 finish for a 12-darter before checking out 69 in two darts to secure the points.
